Found the mold, it's actually an 4 cavity LBT 300 gr LFN GC by Verl Smith. I got this mold courtesy of the original "45" man, Rey Garza. It's mainly because of Rey that I decided to take the 45 Colt & heavy loads back to Africa. Dick DICK, I WAS THINKING IT MAY HAVE BEEN THAT MOULD. GREAT THAT YOU USED IT.

Sixshot, do you remember what velocity those 308gr .45s were doing that you shot the buffalo with?

Sorry, been gone to my grandson's BB game. Those loads were doing 1360 fps from my custom 8.5" barrel with 22.0 grs of H110 & a LP magnum primer. As always, never use someone else's load without working up to it. Seating depth, cylinder throats, crimp, cylinder gap, rotation of the moon, etc. all have a bearing on pressures so its best to ease into any high end load.

Thanks for the reply, sixshot. That's more horsepower than I really need for anything, so mostly just curious. Thanks again for sharing the trip!

25 Below here right now. 35 below actual temp and 52 below wind chill at 5:00 this morning. 20 below wind chill and lower all day. Anyway, time to reread this great thread. Thoroughly enjoyed the hunts, load data, gun/load performance, and fantastic acommodations -- hated the picture of the toe. Outfitter and family like this is what it's all about.

Warmed up to about -4 here today, got so warm I though about going water skiing but figured the water might be too hard! Wednesday was the bad one, cars & trucks off everywhere, mostly from really bad winds, yikes! At least 40 MPH with slick roads & many of the roads were closed. I was in the big city getting my thumb checked from the surgery back in September & all my family was calling to make sure I would get home ok. When I got off I-15 & turned east I spotted a hitch hiker & a small dog standing along the road in that awful wind, I wanted to pick him up but putting that dog in my wife's Buick might have caused a divorce so I quietly wished him luck & kept going. Going east from I-15 is headed into a long ways of pretty much nothing because you are going right into the Wyoming desert after a short drive, that's like falling off the moon in the winter. Africa would look pretty good about now.

Glad to know you made it home w/o incident. How's the thumb? The weather all over has caused many problems for thousands of people.
I went out deer hunting this morning, it was 19 degrees, with winds gusting to 50 MPH. By 10 am,, it had dropped to 12 degrees. That put our wind chill WAY down there. I had to come out of the woods about 2 pm to go with Miss Penny on a few errands. Tonight is supposed to be around 5 degrees here, with the winds only gusting to 35 mph. I'm thinking of sneaking in a few hours in the morning before we head to our family get-together. A few might think I was crazy to be out hunting,, but heck,, I was dressed for the weather,, & never even zipped up my coat. I only saw (2) does today. Not legal now. I've taken (3) does this year already anyway.
I've referenced your safari several times to others when they question the use of cast or handguns for such game. I just tell them to come here,, read your story, and then say it "can't be done." One guy on a carolina gun forum claimed that "only solid copper bullets" were good for dangerous big game. He hasn't responded to me yet when I told him to read your story. Plus,, I remind folks how much of the big game, and "Big 5" were taken with lead bullets LONG before jacketed bullets were invented.

For those of you that are interested here are my most used loads for the 41 magnum & the 45 colt. As usual taken the normal precautions when trying someone else's loads because my guns are Rugers for the most part with some S&W's thrown in, yours might be an import of some kind, you know the drill. My old gunsmith mentor from Dodd City, Texas, Moss Cosper always picked on Charter Arms, he said they were made out of Prince Albert cans! Not sure about that but the point was taken. I've had a 55 year love affair with the 41 magnum, buying my first one in 1967 in Sherman, Texas. It was a 4" model 57, used in the presentation box for $125. They were selling new for $165. My first moulds were the normal 210-215 gr moulds that everyone else was using, the 210032 was one of them but early on I got lucky & found a Saeco #411 that dropped a 230 gr Keith style bullet & I had, at least for me the holy grail of 41 cast bullets. Many years later I would start working with an LBT WFN 250 gr slug that was an absolute hammer & then came the Miha HP's & everything changed after that, in every caliber. Here are my loads. Summer Time loads for the 41 magnum 210 gr Miha HP 8.0 grs Unique 230 gr Saeco 8,0 grs Unique Hunting loads for the 41 magnum 230 gr Saeco 17.0 grs 2400 Deer, elk, bear, antelope, javelina, coyote, field lions 250 gr LBT WFN 17.0 grs 2400 Deer, elk, bear, african game 250 gr Miha HP 17.o grs 2400 Deer, elk, bear, antelope Summer Time loads for Ruger 45 Colts #452424 260 gr 9.0 grs Unique #452423 250 gr AR 7.5 grs Unique Excellent bullet in a 45 Colt Hunting loads for Ruger 45 colts #452424 260 gr 18.5 grs 2400 Miha 275 gr HP Penta 20.0 grs 4227 Miha 282 gr HP small pins 23.0 4227 Heavy hunting load in Africa, magnum primer Miha 308 gr solid 22.0 H110 Heavy load, magnum primer Applegate 325 gr LBT 22.5 grs H110 magnum primer Used on Cape Buffalo, broke one shoulder & exited.
