I recently took delivery of an RSSE from Tyler Gun Works. I am here to give a short review of my initial impressions.
Bobby Tyler's RSSE is a loose reproduction of one of the more (most?) collectable Ruger Singles Actions. I assume RSSE stands for Ruger Single Six Engraved. The original run was of 248 pieces. TGW only made 100 of their New Model versions. The biggest differences (apart from the NM transfer-bar) are the grip frame material and the rear sight type. The NM uses stainless in place of bare aluminum for the "Pinto" grip frame which is a significant upgrade for me. Just personal preference. The NM features a traditional fixed rear sight rather than the dovetailed rear sight in the original. The engraving is not meant to be a perfect match but is done in a similar style.
Please allow me a few minutes and a couple "edits" to get the picture(s) working. It's next to a 44 special sheriff's model Vaquero.
The execution of this project is excellent in my opinion. I am incredibly proud to own this pistol. It's one of those guns that you just hate to put a drag line on the cylinder but at the same time you just can't put it down. I think I have dry fired it every evening that I've had it. Fired it as often as I could as well.
Last time I was at the range was a quick break from the plant during lunch. 90+ degrees in South Texas. I intended to take some pictures - and I did, but it was so sunny when I got there that I held off and began shooting. At one point I caught a lucky break from a cloud and took some pics. I wish I would have thought to wipe the gun off first. You see, the blued finish is pretty remarkable in the right light. Not sure I have the ability to really capture the bright luster. But I tried. I love the fancy walnut grips from SK that are included.
I also want to mention the service I received when dealing with TGW. I called them one day and Bobby himself answered the phone. I asked about the RSSE because I knew they had been released back in 2019 and didn't think he would have any but wanted to be sure. He told me he did have a few left and he directed me to order from his website. We talked a little about what went into these guns besides the obvious cosmetics. He told me he makes sure the timing is perfect. He told me he would get the lowest serial no. he had left and go over it again for me because he's learned a few things since he built these back in 2019 -- again assuring me it would be perfect. It is.
The pistol comes with both the gray plastic Ruger Single Six box and also with a very nice felt lined presentation box. I have nothing bad to say; I am very pleased.
These guns initially shipped with a custom flat gate installed. Bobby told me that he wasn't happy with how they came out because they were too stiff to open with on the NM lock work. He did send me a flat gate but included a regular loading gate installed on the firearm. I appreciate the option but like the functionality of the regular loading gate. I may play with the flat gate at a later time.
My gun is number 96 of 100. I have no affiliation with TGW here is a link if anyone is interested:
Bobby's shop is in Friona, TX -- the Panhandle. Might as well be French Canada as far as I'm concerned in S. Texas. Despite the distance I look forward to having him take on future projects for me.
I hope anyone who has a RSSE (old or new) or any other gun worked over by Bobby will post here with their thoughts.
Thanks and Gig 'em,
Long Oval
