Who else remembers when Pachmayr Gun Works was building 1911s? Before the day of custom barrels for everyone. Pachmayr would weld up the barrel and fit it to your gun. Their literature actually stated that they would remove the barrel from your gun and place it a fixture for testing. If it would not shoot well enough you would be notified that you had to buy a new barrel. I had a copy of the document I got with a cute little Pachmayr Combat Special I owned in the 80s. I'll see if I can dig it up.

Sorry just saw this. Pachmayr also made fabulous rifles. In the early 80s their building to store stocks was the size of the football field. They had been buying blanks since the 20s ....and they didn’t sell blanks they just built rifles with them. Broke the Ol Mans heart. I have a 1977 AA+ stock set up for an Mauser. I’ll get it built one day.
Swenson and Nygord welded up up barrels also I believe.
I just got a Swenson that Nygord worked on also.
Some fine work back then.

Most, if not all of the gunsmiths building bullseye guns welded up 1911 barrels back in the day. I talked to one of the instructors at the National Match Armorer course at Rock Island Arsenal about that. He said that they used to solder razor blade stock to the back of the barrel hoods to 'stretch' them. He said that he used a bucket full of wet sand as a heat-sink when welding up barrel 'feet.'
