The wife likes to go running around the local thrift and antique stores looking to find a deal or some lost treasure. Sometimes I go to be her emotional support animal. And every once in a while, I get rewarded for being a great husband with a pretty great find. This is one of them. One booth at the local antique emporium contained several gun magazines from the 70s and 80s. They were packed 5 or 6 together in clear bags. And while you could see the outer 2 titles, the ones between them were more or less a lottery situation. Don't know what you'll get. Well, upon opening one of those packs, I discovered this beautiful 98-page copy of Shooting Times Magnums from 1981. As you can tell from the cover, it was destined to be good. But going to the Table of Contents revealed this little gem's true worth. Among others, there are 2 Skeeter articles and 4 Bradshaw articles! Jackpot!!

The problem is the market. 40 years ago the sixgun was King and the articles in this old annual which I purchased originally and still treasure covered the guns the market wanted. Today there are only three firearms available, at least according to the majority of the market. They are #1) 9 mm pistols; #2) ARs; #3) everything else. So with this in mind most of the magazine articles have to follow the market. I'm still given a lot of leeway and what I want to write about in AH and GUNS, and of course in my books there are no restrictions.

The cool part is that it only cost me $12 and thats with the other 5 or 6 magazines included with this one. And going through those 1970s issues and seeing the various ads of the time, really shows the contrast to today's "allowable" ads. The cigarette ads, liquor ads. There was even one with a mostly nude female model. Not that it bothered me a whole lot , but I can imagine just how well those would be tolerated today. Only read a couple of the articles so far and those were really good. I can't remember the last time I picked up any magazine with this many articles and every single one of them appeals to me. Every one!

HOW MANY OF YOU REMEMBER THE FIRST COPIES OF "GUNS", "GUNS & AMMO", AND "SHOOTING TIMES"? I WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL WHEN I FOUND THE FIRST COPY OF "GUNS", JANUARY 1955. "G&A" STARTED AS A QUARTERLY IN 1958. "ST" WAS A NEWSPAPER FORMAT WHEN IT FIRST CAME OUT. SKEETER MADE ST SPECIAL.JUST TALKED TO BART SKELTON AT LENGTH LAST WEEK. HE IS STILL IN DEMING. ANOTHER FAVORITE WRITER OF MINE BACK THEN WAS KENT BELLAH.

I'm not old enough to remember the beginnings of those magazines,, but I sure enjoyed them when I found them. Skeeter was truly a favorite of mine! (Still is!)

Guns and G&A were dad's subscriptions, learned a lot through those magazines when I was growing up.
Does anybody know of a resource to search for past articles from those magazines? I'm looking for one where a guy restored a lower grade 16ga Parker, probably early-mid 1970s, and believe it was in one of those titles rather than the hook and bullet types.
