While searching around for some instructions for dis/re/assembly of the FA Model 83 I came across this quote from one of our members - There is a comprehensive article on disassembly of the 83 in an issue of the Five Shot Journal (FACA publication) ... with photographs. If anyone's got their old copies of the Five Shot Journal and would be willing to thumb through them to find said article, I'd certainly appreciate it. It seems the FACA has copies available for sale and I'd love to get my hands on that article!!

I would probably not take yours apart unless your really sure about it I am a personal friend of the head gunsmith there and he said he has many guns come in that people can not reassemble just a heads up.

Try #6-3 for the 83, and #7-2 for the 97. I've attempted many times to contact FACA to purchase these issues, and have never gotten a response. All indications are they are defunct. If so, I'd think they would take down the site.

I would be interested in Volume VII issue 3, which is listed at the FACA site as Volume 6, Issue 3 ( Link to the FACA listing) Although it would be good to get conformation that this issue actually has some pics/description of how to tear one down (and put it back together again) before I buy it (which might not even be possible??). It's not that I NEED to tear mine apart, but I have it in my mind to buy one of Ronnie Wells gripframes for my M83 when he makes them available. There is other work that I'd like done to the gun, so sending it to a reputable smith is not out of the question. Thought I might send it off to FA for the initial work, then fit the gripframe myself...

Thought I might send it off to FA for the initial work, then fit the gripframe myself... Kinda funny this topic came up because I just was in freedom visiting and I bought a set of those laminated green grips obviously need to be fit to the gun so my friend said just send me the grip frame and I'll fit the new grips he's making them a little wider for me and then he thought he forgot how to show me how to remove and put back on. he told me you'll either see "it" or you won't some people get them back together easily and some won't I haven't even decided myself I might just wait until we antelope hunt next year and obviously I can just hand him the gun instead of paying all that money to ship. I don't want to bugger anything up even though I'm very mechanical inclined I just might have some additional work done once I decide which gun is getting the grips I might do the 2008 and have a couple additional barrels fitted while I'm there.

Well, curiosity killed the cat. I went ahead and ordered the issue of the Five Shot Journal that I linked to above (pdf download). It took all of thirty seconds to download and less than that to find the article in question. Sure enough, on pages 11-18 there is a nice little write-up on tearing-down and reassembling a Model 83 complete with pictures. Just what I was looking for.
