It is a snare. Three sprig steel loops with a trigger hanging down in the middle. The kit comes with a 1/4" steel probe and a tapered hard plastic housing that you push into the run once you find it and it leaves a perfect fit hole to insert the trap in. Once in the run you hold the top part and slide the lower section p to set the trap and expose the snare. Slicker than snot on a door knob once you get the hang of locating the run since gophers tend to dig short tunnels to get rid of the spoils by digging 90* to the main run then another 90* to bring the spoils to the surface.
