So my tooth pick wedge under the front sight of my 1899 vintage Model 1894 saddle ring carbine, brought the point of impact down a little, But i am still about 8 inches high at 50 yards. This old Winchester is still a very good shooter , group wise , but if the groups are 8 inches high at 50 yards, The rifle is no good for hunting. The front sight is a Marble 894. And according to the Winchester sight book, that is correct.
I think I will travel to the Dalles Oregon after work on Tuesday, /And check out a guy I know with a bunch of old sights. I could cut the Ladder style rear sight cut deeper, but not on this old Girl. Next month there will be the Oregon Arms Collector show at the Portland Airport Holliday, in. If I have not come up wit a solution, I might just trade the old Girl on something different, Maybe A round barrel Rifle in 30/30, or a 92 in 44/40 or 38/40. I figure this one is worth 12 to 1400, That and a few hundred bucks might well get me something worth having, I know where i can Get a very nice 92 SRC, in 38/40, but the price is 2500, I think it is worth 2100, That old 92 would be a hoot, to carry in the woods, while my friends are bow hunting. And while it is a little light for really Big Black bear, Bears that big are pretty rare around here, Anybody have an Idea Where i Might get a period correct front sight blade for my old 30/30 ? ...tj

I’ve had good luck with eBay, looking at the replacement blades it should be easy enough to fabricate something yourself, or perhaps give 2 dogs a call. It’s nothing more than a blade of steel with a hole in the bottom for pinning, and I’d prefer a straight flat blade over the contoured brass bead type.
Although, a 92 in 38-40 is something I’m looking for as well, it could be loaded to close to 41 mag performance. Trapr

I ight talk to fermin, as far as the 3840 goes i would be happy with 10mm level, I think a bunch depends on the rifle. A post WW 1 will likly have better steel !

You push a 38-40 that fast and it too will likely shoot high. It’s been my experience with these old lever actions to keep velocities about factory level or they will print high. Tom

Uh, the FASTER the bullet, the LOWER it will shoot. At least thats been my observation in 70 years of shooting firearms. Bullet weights being equal, or close, of course.

I have had experience closer to lockhart, However There is high and there is 8 inches high at 25 yards. I could live with 3 inches high at 50 yards just fine...tj

That's the way most Desert Eagles are, the sights they put on at the factory shoot about 8" high at 25 yards. They must be sighted in for 500 yards! I fixed mine by buying a Williams Firesight rear, and a custom made front sight from Dawson Precision. I now have full adjustable sights on my .50AE.
