Whats the bullet weight for the Vortex load?
Lots of Whelen fans over on the Africa Hunting forum. One fella from Down Under gets velocities out of his rifle that rival low end .375 Hollands! He uses CFE223 powder in large doses and says his loads are clocked and legit and safe in his rifle. His loads surpass the .338 Win mag even though the .338 has a larger capacity. He claims over 2900fps/4200ME for 225 grs, over 2700fps/4050ME for 250 grs. Real barn burner loads!

Thats what I hear. I suspect not many will ever get there with their rifles, even if they try. Those loads are really pushing the envelope. I was always happy to get 2650 or so with a 225 and push 2600 with a 250. I never tried to make an H&H out of one, its still an '06 case.

What elk could ever tell the difference of 50 FPS? I have a couple of rifles I lean on a bit because they shoot more accurately the harder you lean on them. But generally I have given up my firewalled loads in most guns, they just are not worth the stress. Plus if I want more there are always bigger guns I can get.
That said some cartridges are just loaded pretty mild, 338 win mags come to mind. I run a 225gr Partition at 2950fps with no pressure signs other than recoil that gets pretty unpleasant!
I have pondered the 35 Whelan for a long time, classic cool cartridge that is a real elk killer. I have a 1895 reproduction 30/06 that I am so tempted to rechamber into one…

That is some smokin' velocities...
Would be interested in knowing what the velocity is from a 22" bolt gun as that is what several of my friends hunt with...

Not sure what one of my friend's is using but I know the other is shooting a 225 Nosler Petition for all his game.....and has killed a bunch of deer and one moose. My guess would be he is in the 2600 fps range...
I have several .350 Remington Magnums... One is a custom built Montana Rifle Company gun with a 22" barrel. Because the action is just slightly longer than a Remington it allows the bullet to be seated so the base is at the base of the neck...allowing for more powder. Have loads that went over 2700 with a 250 and 2900 with a 200... More than I will ever need...

I wonder how RAD78 would work in the Whelen... I plan on trying it in my 338-06.
