I think I found the problem. The short leg on the gate detent spring that engages the gate looks to be bent a little past 90*. Which makes a sharp edge of the spring stick out past that portion of the gate. That sharp edge looks to be catching the case rims when I try and cock the hammer. I plan to gently bend that leg back to 90* and round that edge off.

Is the cylinder latch/bolt dropping? Might be a busted pin in the hammer. ***** lead hound.... your original description of a problem on your New Model was unintelligible: “filing the latch notch a little closer to the ratchet end....” I thought, here we go again, some is filing on the frame. But I didn’t know whether you had filed open the hole in the frame for the BASE PIN LATCH, or filed open the hole in the frame for CYLINDER LATCH to engage STOP NOTCHES in the cylinder. Your last description indicates CYLINDER LATCH SPRING jumps off its groove in the LOADING GATE (which makes guanine operable). If so, the fix may require a new LOADING GATE SPRING. The groove & camping surface on the loading gates should be examined for a casting protuberance of burr. As you surmise, the angled end of gate spring must not protrude the plane of the STANDING BREECH. Rims must glide for smooth cylinder rotation in all positions. Ruger liked to have one part do two jobs. In this case, the loading gate spring also secures the trigger pin. David Bradshaw

Bradshaw, leadhound didnt say he filed the notch. I filed the notch on the base pin that engages the base pin latch. I edited my original post.

This sixgun is fixed and has turned out to be my most accurate 45 sixgun! The gate spring was the culprit. The short leg of the spring was over bent from Ruger I imagine. I rebent the short leg of the spring a little before 90*. Installed it and tested it at the range. It hasnt had a hiccup since. It has shot both moderate loads and heavy Ruger loads. This gun continues to impress me. Next thing it to cut the barrel back to 5 1/2” and install a new front sight base with interchangeable blades.

You might think about a Belt Mountain Base Pin with the screw to lock it in place so it can't jump under recoil.

Is the cylinder latch/bolt dropping? Might be a busted pin in the hammer. Broken, or bent hammer plunger, perhaps?
