I havent taken it apart yet but I was hoping some of you may point me in the right direction as something to look for when I do disassemble it. This is a 7 1/2” Bisley Blackhawk 45 colt, shooting Ruger loads. Last week the base pin was jumping out nearly every shot. That was an easy fix by filing the latch notch (the notch in the base pin that engages the base pin latch) a little closer to the ratchet end of the cylinder. This let the base pin latch seat better on the base pin. I thought this would take care of the still current problem. Heres the problem in question..... After every shot I can not cock the hammer for the next shot. The gate will start to open if I pull hard enough on the hammer. Instead I have to hold the cylinder so it doesnt roll, open the gate, close the gate, and then the hammer can be cocked. What would cause this issue? What do I need to look for when I disassemble it? Thanks

This cocking issue doesnt happen when the gun is dry fired. I just checked that.

If the base pin plunger does not push the transfer bar back, the bar top will hit the rear of the firing pin. The bolt spring plunger in the grip frame can sometimes shift to the side. Sounds like you need to break it down and inspect parts. Ive had case heads rubbing on the loading gate cause similar lock downs.

Base-pin plunger not pushing the transfer bar rearward. Point the barrel at the sky & thumb the hammer back. If that works, check the base-pin.

Ill check the spring plunger when I disassemble it later today.

Is your firing pin sticking ? Will it freely rotate when the gate is open. Is the loading gate and spring in properly?

leadhound mentioned the loading gate and loading gate spring. Heavy recoil could be causing the loading gate spring to jump off the loading gate detent and tying up the action until you start wiggling the cylinder and pushing the spring tip back into place on the gate detent. The spring can jump out of place especially if an empty chamber is adjacent to the loading gate and no support is provided by a case head.

Does this happen with a fully loaded cylinder, or are you partially loading 2-5 rounds???

Also check and see if your grip frame is tight to the frame.

I appreciate all you guys help. I took it out again today and it is acting like its gonna be one of my most accurate sixguns. 100yd gong was pretty easy. But I still had to push thru the cocking issue, lol Oh, the problem was still there even with lighter loads.

Is the cylinder latch/bolt dropping? Might be a busted pin in the hammer.
