By cocking an OM Ruger SA to the first "notch or click," takes the tension off the firing pin rebound spring. With the hammer at full down position, it's compressing the firing pin rebound spring. And as noted,, by always going to "full cock" before lowering the hammer on an OM Ruger,, you can prevent the dreaded "turn line." ***** Tyrone.... a most interesting observation and practice. At variance from my own, as my normal is to carry hammer down on empty chamber. Extending more than a half-century, Ruger’s firing pin spring seems no worse for wear. Experience commits no sin by my practice, while peace of mind serves yours equally. Whatever a shooter's loading technique, the job is to not carry Peacemaker lockwork with a load under the hammer. David, I understand completely. I had this practice explained to me in machinist classes long ago.
"Any spring, left under any tension will potentially create a "set" of that tension. it's wise to not allow the set to happen."
As such, it started a habit long ago. And yes, I know springs & their tensions have improved over the years.

Yes, the people here are quite experienced. That tends to make them knowledgeable. I'm a comparative new comer and much less so..........

While I have a lifetime of shooting behind me, I still consider myself a bit green in many areas. Always be willing to learn & keep an open mind. A perfect example has been the "recent" process of home made, powder coating cast lead bullets. Taught this old dog a few new tricks.
