I took My NM 4 5/8ths 41Mag out this weekend, It is a bit of a hand full with full power loads, But if i back off just a bit it is great fun. It likely will be awhile for i get to it, but I think it would make a real nice outdoorsman's packing pistol, And with a wells K bird Alloy grip frame it would look great with some stag grips, And I think with less than full power loads would still be great fun, and you could still run heavy loads in it when needed. I have a 5.5 inch SS Bisley 41 already, as a hunting revolver, so this one is more for woods carry and as a side arm to a rifle ! ...tj

I am probably the retarded duck of the bunch but I cant stand the birds head grip at all. I lose it in my oversized mitts no matter the caliber. XR3-Red is as small as I can go and hit anything smaller than water from the bottom of a lake.

I think you’d be happier with an Aluminum XR3-RED as well - maybe with a roundbutt configuration.

I actually like the Birdshead on my 45 Colt Snubbie... but...
for me, with the aluminum grip frame, the longer the barrel, the more out of balance the gun is... My snubbie ( for me ) has a perfect balance with the stainless birdshead grip frame... aluminum would make the gun lighter, but it would lose some of what I consider "perfect balance" on a strictly CCW use single action... I could probably live with, & get used to the balance on the snubbie with the aluminum grip frame with reduced weight as motivation... maybe up to a 4 5/8" inch length, but definitely not with anything longer...
next would be the recoil & the grip shape... again, if it were a CCW use gun, & 41 Special, or light loads in 41 Magnum... probably OK... as a woods knock around gun, where you may want full power loads... I'd probably opt for another grip shape

I use aluminum on a lot of my single actions . I use birdsheads on none of my single actions . Whatever that means. But that's the Ruger grip . I'm sure the RW KBIRD would improve the dynamics a bunch with the higher grip . One thing I have noticed , more often than not , when a picture of a fine lookin birdshead is shown the gun has no wear and tear . Most notably no turn line. That kinda tells me a lot of them are built for looks or carefull carry,,,,,,,, but very little shooting. And that's fine , if that's what that gun is for.

I’m a bit like Airborne on the birdshead grip, I much prefer a roundbutt bisley. However I think if it works for you, go for it, it should make quite a nice daily carry gun. I really enjoy my FA97, 41mag with its 4.2 barrel for field carry.

I put one of them on my Blackhawk .41 Magnum (6 1/2 inch barrel) yesterday and it feels 100% better than the original XR3 RED that came on it, I still need to polish out the grip frame and contour the micarta grips for my hand but it is shootable right now.You have to use a Bisley hammer but I think you would find the extra heft pleasing on your gun. IMO the K bird has more in common with a round butt Bisley grip frame than it does with a birds head. On a birds head my pinky finger ends up underneath the grip frame, the K bird is much more robust, all my fingers are on the front strap. It is what the birds head should have been all along. Rhino

I don't like aluminum anything on my Single Actions, and especially don't like birdshead grips. I prefer blued steel parts on my guns, and find the square backstraps offer better support for me, especially when the barrel runs out to 7 1/2" in length.
Just my preferences.

XR3-Red is as small as I can go and hit anything smaller than water from the bottom of a lake. ME TOO!! I tried a Lipsey's 3-3/4" Birdshead 45 Colt for about a week. I couldn't reliably hit anything with it. Sent it down the road. Birdshead grips and big hands apparently don't go together. At least not for me.

I can't stand the Ruger birdshead grip either. I've tried to like it... I WANT to like it! But it feels terrible in my hands & as others have mentioned, I have trouble shooting it accurately & hitting anything reliably with it. If they'd have gone with more of a Colt style saw handle grip, I'd most likely view it more favourably.

I've got no problem hitting with mine, & I have big hands... but then I shot CAS for a couple years with my Colt Lightning style brass grip frames I put on my Montados, & I couldn't hit the broad side of a barn the 1st couple times out with those, so there may be some learning curve involved... now my snubbie is minute o' RACCOON, or running possum in my hands... while they are not the same... Montados with Brass Colt Lightning style grips are the 4th pair down... ( it took me a couple 100 rounds shooting these, before I started hitting consistently & reliably ) & transitioning to the Ruger Birdshead was a snap, after I got used to shooting the Lightning style grips

Gentlemen, PREFERENCE, PREFERENCE, PREFERENCE!!!!!! You gotta love it huh? I cannot make up my mind. Hahaha. Here is the out come of that problem for me. I make an X Bird which follows the front and backstrap positioning of the XR3 original and the New Model Vaquero. This is an X Bird In Black over a XR3 RED in Red. Little bitty booger Here is a RED Bird in Black over an XR3 RED. notice front and backstrap placement. It follows the XR3 RED Redesign. Here is My Super bird In Black over the XR3 Red in Red. This one follows the Super Black Hawk Grip Frames position and Length. Here is all 3 together for reference. X bird from left to Red Bird in the middle to Super Bird on the right. Sounds like a bunch of dam car models huh? Gentlemen this is the K Bird in Black over an XR3 Red in Red. It is a front strap of my popular Keith # 5 all birded out. It works great with a larger hand and balances well in all Materials. Here it is over a standard Bisley. And here is the K Bird in Black over a BIRDSLEY. Self explanatory I know its a lot to chew on but they all fit some ones preference or hand size and if i can dream up another one i will darn sure make it. Hahaha. Love to all, hope that helps. R

Ronnie.... a reference to find a preference. Excellent suit of graphics.
tj3006.... while I do not care for a birdied grip single action, the stainless Baby Vaquero with birdhead grip in .45 ACP is a sweetie. To achieve any proximity to this comfort level with a birdhead in .41 Mag, solemnly ponder Ronnies drawings for both palm support and full finger engagement on front strap. To me, there is no such thing as “most of the time use” of moderate loads with “occasional use” of Rocks & Dynamite from a STINGY-GRIP featherweight handle. The importance of the pinky finger in stabilizing the front strap at the moment of recoil is well understood by Ronnie Wells. David Bradshaw

He has a .500 Linebaugh Gallagher gun that ha a birdshead grip that I believe he loves.
