I TRADED A BLACK BEAR RUG TO A BUDDY FOR A 300 WHISPER (A 300 BLACKOUT TO YOU YOUNGSTERS) AR. BY FRIEND BUILDS AR's AND WANTED ONE OF MY RUGS SO WE MADE SOME MEDICINE. MY RIFLES GET VERY LITTLE USE BUT THIS CARBINE IS LIGHT AND HANDY AND MAY GET SOME WOODS BUMMING TIME AND/OR PIGS AND VARMINTS DUTY. I FIGURE 150 YARDS WOULD BE THE FURTHEST SHOT, MAYBE MOST AT 100 YARDS AND UNDER. SOME SHOTS AT NIGHT BUT WITH SOME LIGHT AROUND THE TARGET. I WANT TO KEEP THE 300 LIGHT AND HANDY AND WAS THINKING OF A RED DOT SIGHT. MOST RED DOT SIGHTS ARE MORE COMPACT THAN ANY COMPACT SCOPE.
ANY RECOMMENDATIONS ON SCOPE vs RED DOT, AND ON WHAT TO USE?
P.S. MY PREFERENCE IS TO KEEP MY OPTICS BUDGET (OPTIC & MOUNT) TO $300 OR LESS.

Budget? Ha! Buy once cry once! I like the Vortex Prism. Reticle is etched in the glass so it is functional with or without a battery.

I’ve got a bunch of red dot tube sights and possibly a spare reflex. I’ll bring them to Highpoint, maybe we can work a possible trade for the other Burris handgun scope.

I do the same type of hunting with my 375 H&H. I used a Vortex Venom 1-6x30. Awesome low light ability and for danged sure tough. Mine has the center dot of the reticle that lights up when turned on. I love it at dusk with the red dot turned on the lowest setting. At 1 power (essentially zero magnification) I cannot tell the difference between looking through the scope or the bare eye. Same picture, same view.

x101airborne: I HAVE A VORTEX WITH THE RED DOT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CROSSHAIRS THAT LIGHT UP WHEN TURNED ON ON A 5.56 RUGER AMERICAN BOLT RIFLE. A SCOPE MAY NOT ADD A LOT OF WEIGHT BUT SCOPE AND AR MOUNTS ADD A LOT OF SIZE/BULK TO AN OTHERWISE TRIM FLAT TOP AR, THAT IS WHY I AM LEANING TOWARDS A RED DOT OF SOME SORT.

Aaah. Cool! Definitely look for one with an etched reticle. In an emergency you dont have to fiddle with buttons; the reticle is always there.

HOW CAN SIGHT ADJUSTMENTS BE MADE ON AN "ETCHED" RETICLE?

Same as a non etched, you just make your adjustments and all the magic happens inside.
