Years ago (a couple decades, actually), I found a barely-used M-640 Centennial at my LGS. This was 2-3 months after a custom M-640 had been on the cover of American Handgunner. It was only $320 at the time and the inside of the frame is inscribed "APPROVED FOR +P+ USE" This was a good decade before the .357 version was introduced. I will admit it's quite snappy with even +P ammo. A year later I'm working at that same store and found an M-642 lightweight in the back of the vault. I sold it to my brother. World of difference when it comes to carrying as well as shooting. I've told him a dozen times "I want one that feels like yours to carry and feels like mine when I shoot it!" Awesome little tools. I've found with plenty of dry fire practice, range time becomes much more productive.

Trey.... surprises to be had in snubnose performance. Note penetration through water jugs of the lowly .38 Special bullseye load of soft lead 148 Wadcutter Hollow Base. Jim Cirillo, a top shot on the NYPD, is said to have used 148 WC on the Stake Out Unit. I kind of assumed he used the 200 grain Lead Round Nose, which other firearms savvy cops on NYPD carried. Chic Gaylord, a father of the water-molded holster and instigator of nylon stitching and made leather for a lot of detective and undercover NYPD, touted the 200 RN. The 200 RN has a blunter round nose than the cone head profile of the traditional 158 RN. David Bradshaw

David Bradshaw I believe it was Mr. Cirillo who had a good amount of real-world ballistic anecdotes in connection with the round as well. Seems to prove out as a very lethal combination.

Charles Askins, Jr., describes in his autobiography Unrepentant Sinner, ducking into the shadows of a house as a lone German soldier enters to look around. Askins plugs the enemy with a 200 Round Nose from his Colt .38 Special. In a book written decades earlier, Askins felt that softball showed greater effect on an adversary that hardball of the same configuration. The difference was not much, but enough for the gunslinger to notice. Charles Askins was a national handgun champion, which to this shooter lends credence to his power of observation. David Bradshaw
