So for quite a while, I was looking to find some way of working the 56-50 centerfire into a revolver, after getting exposed to a civil war era Spencer repeating rifle, and ordering up a box of new Starline cases... my thought was if I could build a revolver in that cartridge, I’d buy a new reproduction rifle in the same caliber... the 56-50 revolver doesn’t look like it will ever materialize...
Yesterday, my retired tool and die buddy gave me an additional twenty-five 50-70 cases.... I have an old Martini rifle in 50-70, that I originally bought from him, these cases had been shot a time or two with black powder ( and rinsed to neutralize ) afterwards, but were much more grungey than the rest of my cases, that get treated to wet tumbling with Dawn and a little citric acid
I don’t play with this cartridge too much but decapping and cleaning them up just puts a smile on my face... when they get clean and dried, thinking I’ll be looking at them, and my 500 JRH - BFR cylinder... I know they do the BFR’s in 500 Linebaugh, which is also a .511 bore... I’m wondering if there is enough space to clear the 50-70 rim, and if they would make me one out of the custom shop... hmmm 50-70 rifle and revolver combo You guys have anything big and slow ( a punkin chucker ) in a rifle revolver combo???
Thoughts to the 50-70 in a revolver??? I not thinking anything to better a Linebaugh, only loading to levels my Martini could handle... thinking lots o Trailboss

Hmmm the cylinder is not big around enough for five 50-70 cases... would also need the long frame, as the cases would fit, but no room for the bullets in the shorter cylinder.... I would assume the long cylinder is the same diameter as the shorter cylinder???
Maybe I could turn the rims to fit... then modify the extractor on the martini for the smaller rim
Or buy a BFR in 500 Linebaugh, cut the cases off an 1/8” and rechamber the rifle for the shorter 500 Linebaugh special cases... not thinking this particular Martini being a little worn could not handle full pressure Linebaugh cartridges
“500 pumpkin chucker” loaded to what the rifle could handle, and the revolver could fire the “pumpkin chucker” or the Linebaugh

I had pondered upon this myself, looking for a one of kind idea. I am guessing it is too large? Figured I would just go with a 50 special or perhaps trim it back for a "50 Russian" LOL! My idea is just for a boomer to hurl a chunk of lead at something for fun. Maybe a 1:1 case length to bullet length ratio?

500 Linebaugh Case - VRS - 50-70 Government - 348 Winchester ( Linebaugh parent case )
Rim... .610" - .660" - .610"
Rim Thickness... .070" - .065" - .070"
Case Length... 1.405" - 1.75" - 2.255"
Overall Length... 1.755" - 2.25" - 2.795"
Still thinking here... I could maybe turn down the 50-70 Rims, for a long cylinder BFR chambering, or like I mentioned Buy a 500 Linebaugh BFR, & pull the barrel on the Martini & chamber it short for the 500 Linebaugh (1/8" short) & trim a few cases short for the rifle & the Revolver at reduced pressures ( maybe the BFR custom shop would short chamber the revolver cylinder as well for my pooch loads??? )

Hmmm... Starline is currently making 500 Special brass... that might be a better case, rather than reinventing the wheel... but the Rifle I'd like to use already has a .511 bore not .500 so that would require a barrel change as well as extractor work... wondering if the BFR could be chambered in 500 Special if I purchased the reamer, in a short cylinder instead of the 500 S&W in a long cylinder?

Just to clarify for myself. I always forget there is a difference. I heard about the 50 special long before I ever heard of the 500 magnum.
50 special = shortened Linebaugh (.510-.512)
500 special = shortened 500 S&W magnum (.50)

Thinking I may have to leave the Martini alone... and look at one of the Encore Pro Hunters in 500 S&W, then could either do an X Frame or a BFR in 500 S&W... I'm just not in love with the X Frame or the Long Cylinder BFR's... but I did get get this message back from Magnum Research today so I'm still thinking about the 500 Special... correct headstamped cases from Starline are about half the price of the 500 JRH through Buffalo Bore, & are .2" shorter than the JRH, which would allow more room on a short cylinder BFR for a punkin chuckin boolet... thinking I could keep my JRH as a hot rod, & the 50 Special as a Trailboss heavy lead bullet gun... if the 500 S&W Encore barrel doesn't shoot nice with the Special in it, a new barrel , Custom, or 50 A.E. or 50 GI rechambered to 500 Special doesn't sound real difficult...

Punkin chunkin set is going to be 50-70... I have my Martini, and in the process is a 9” Encore barrel in 50-70... that aught to be the definition of a punkin chunker
