Received in invite to help dispose of a basement just packed with all kinds of stuff. This older man was a saver of you name it, it went to the basement. While rummaging through a small box I discovered what I think is a valuable keeper, at least to me anyway. I've never seen anything like this before, it's a Nichols Derringer, the lettering on the barrel states Jacksonville, Texas and on the grip frame the word Dyna-Mite. This brought back some found memories as a kid of all the cap pistols I once owned that seemed to have vanished from my collection. As a kid I always had the propensity to hang out just a little over the edge of life and it's a wonder I lived past my 18th birthday. Looking at the workings of this derringer it has a flat striker plate that the caps must have been placed on to make the bang. While looking closer at the little slide on the top I discovered it would eject the striker plate that turned out to be a blank bullet. I could have seen me now with this thing headed to the local OTASCO or Western Auto store to investigate the bullet shelves to see which live round would fit. As it turns out a 380 will fit just a little long. My mind would have had me removing the round and powder cutting the brass down to the size of the blank, probably packing some powder back in the brass, putting some sort of an object on hammer to strike the primer. Placing it in Grand-Dad's vice getting some string to pull the trigger to see just what kind of a boom I could make, before I tried holding it my hand to show off to our gang. Google up Nichols Cap Guns A true Taxes Legacy.

I had to go check my box of "stuff" to make sure that it wasn't MY basement you were in. I have one of these in the original box that I dated Dec. 25, 1960 when I received it as a kid. No ammo though. The 2 piece cartridge was separated, a cap placed on the back of the bullet, and the case put back in place. When the hammer fell the cap went off and the gas escaped through the hole in the bullet. Nichols also made SA revolvers that used the same type ammo. I had a pair of those back in the day but they're gone. Somehow I held on to the Dyna-Mite.

Well we're one of the chosen few that own a Dyna-Mite. While looking at the website and the box, a label on the bottom side said, if you ever wanted you gun reconditioned just send it back to Nichols and for the sum of .35 cents they'd make it as good as new. Do you have that in lid of yours?

This older man was a saver of you name it, it went to the basement. 50 years ago I cleaned out a widow's basementAnd amidst all the plain junk that went to the dump I struck gold in the form of American Rifleman magazines which gave me all the sixgun articles Elmer Keith had written.
