I came across a rough set of walnut OM XR3 grips that were in need of some TLC. I decided to see if I could make them fit the new model XR3 frame on my 44 Spl Flattop. A little fine work with chisels to inlet a recess for the internal lock. Then sanded them down to take a lot of the dents and dings out. Then sanded them to 1000 grit then gave them a few coats of old linspeed Finnish. There are a few dents left that didn’t sand out ( I didn’t want to take to much wood off) Here is the result on my New Model Flattop. I think they look better that the white polymer faux ivory grips that were on there. I may have to touch up the eagles on the medallions next. what do y’all think. Jonathan.

They came out nice. They say you can steam out the dents with a hot iron and a wet rag, but I have not tried it.

I use the damp rag and hot iron quite often to raise dents. As long as the grain has not been torn you can often make the dents disappear.

I’ll try that dent steaming trick next time I am refinishing some grips or an old stock.

Like Robb, I raised quite a few dents and even scratches (different critter though) with a damp rag and an iron. What Bagby was doing would have even made it easier as he was lightly sanding anyway.
Bagby, you can always go back and do the wet rag and iron trick. You won't be removing any more wood, just smoothing it out afterwards. Wood is an amazing thing.

Looking good! I fit a set of original Black Eagle Walnut's to my 4-5/8" NM 44 Flattop as well...But I just removed the useless lock & replaced it with a Bearcat strut.
