Have had these banging around here for quite some time and thought I'd share. We've all seen real roper grips made for S&W and Colt double actions, or Keith Browns exquisite copies. Here's something I'm guessing most haven't seen. A set designed by Walter Roper and crafted by Mathias Gagne for the Colt SAA. I've seen a few, literally 3, pictures of SAA Ropers, but none like these. Full on ambidextrous target grips complete with the signature checkering pattern. Being made for a 1st gen SAA, they do not fit my 2nd or 3rd gen guns or my USFAs. Have hope of finding a Great Western Arms 22 target model one of these days. supposedly they had a smaller gripframe that might accommodate there. While not my style, I find them to be a very interesting piece of handgun history.

Reminds me of old Jay Scott target grips, big and ugly.

My guess is that aesthetics were a secondary consideration in the design of these grips. Aesthetics might be the reason that this is likely the only set of sculpted target SAA grips that Roper/Gagne ever made. Had an old set of Herretts that were very similar minus the wings, the Ropers feel much better.

I’ve only seen one other set of Roper SA grips and I think they sold on the S&W forum. May have been these? Who knows.

I bet they're very comfortable when properly fit to a sixgun. Almost appears to be a woodworker's attempt at creating something akin to Bisley - changing the traditional SAA grip into something more target/bullseye friendly.

Almost looks like a slightly oversized No 5 grip to me.

Almost looks like a slightly oversized No 5 grip to me. That’s probably what it’s closest to. The back strap of the grip follows the back strap of the gun closely. While perhaps big and ugly, it was designed and crafter by a couple of the great masters of the grip making trade and there won’t be anymore. As a student of the handgun, that was reason enough for me to buy them.
