finally getting around to getting a replacement scope for my Stainless Stalker BOSS rifle in 338 Win Mag... on the short list for glass, all are 34mm scopes... looking like rings / bases are pretty limited... thinking I need to get a picatinny base & a set of rings???
but I'm open for suggestions... the rifle doesn't have sights, so a "removable" ring doesn't offer any advantages, & possible disadvantages... I'm looking to make this a "factory" long range rifle... my range only goes to 300 yards right now, but would love to have something to use if visiting a range for use upto & possibly over 600 yards ( I know that's not really long range for the guys that play that game ) I likely won't use this for hunting, as I still have several left that can handle big game at reasonable hunting ranges
thoughts??? fire away

This is what 1st appeals to me at 1st look... thinking silver base, so I can mill off the extra lugs, & smooth things out, & not have to refinish the base ( gun is bead blast stainless anyway )...Thinking with a good scope, & 34mm tubes, I don't need a MOA base, for only 600 yards??? but maybe I'm wrong there??? www.midwayusa.com/product/1018662029www.midwayusa.com/product/1018515960?pid=311307right now this is 1st choice for my glass... I also may opt for the 25X but for my shorter long range distances, I'm thinking 20X is enough??? www.midwayusa.com/product/1548821145BTW... I don't buy everything from Midway, but they do typically offer good pictures & info on most products available...

A 2-10x would be plenty for deer sized animals out to 600. If you’re simply wanting more magnification for ? OK. My 338wm wears a Burris 2-10x Veracity and makes a very nice allpurpose hunting rig, my 9.3x64 wears a 1-8x and I’ve carried both on hunts where shots at 400 and beyond were a definite possibility, and never felt under glassed.. I’d recommend Warne rings and Warne base. Trapr

The more magnification you have in a scope starts to do several things. 1. It shows how much you really shake and you lose confidence. 2. The higher you go in magnification, the closer your eye has to get to the scope. 3. Mirage and parallax become more evident. 4. More glass is more weight. Ounces are pounds, pounds are pain. 5. Light transmission starts to be limited unless you are spending a ton of money. 6. Scope rings unless diligently installed can let heavy scopes slip during recoil.
This applies to most things but not all things are equal. Everything has been done before proving it can be done, these are just some things to look out for.

Give Badger products a look. Not sure if they make a base for that rifle but it’s worth a look. If not, the EGW will be fine.
We use a lot of Badger rings as well. But, these days, Most of our big guns have Spuhr ring mounts. They are a one piece set up. Ours typically have 30MOA built into the mount but they have zeros as well.
Lots of surface area to keep the heavier scopes from moving which is usually the deal on a 34mm scope.
Do you have a list of scopes you’re looking at? Chances are, someone has used them here. What’s your budget?

There is no good reason to not get a 20moa (or 30moa) base.
