The M1909 New Service was the benchmark during the selection process for the M1911 pistol. During endurance testing of the competitors for replacing the M1909 with a semiautomatic pistol, only the M1911 passed without any glitch - that is, only the M1911 and the New Service.
Anyone else wonder why S&W's New Century revolver, in production for several years, was not selected as the War Department's "stopgap" handgun rather than the New Service? Same approximate size, cartridge availability. The New Century is invariably touted as, perhaps, the finest revolver S&W has made. Perhaps Swiss watch mechanism doesn't work as efficiently as one might anticipate when conditions of use are in war. But this doesn't account for the New Service being the first handgun to shoot a perfect revolver score in competition. Sloppy mechanisms don't shoot perfect scores.
