My little Marlin 1894 is set up similarly but the optic is a bit farther forward, it is one of my favorite walk about rifles as well when Im Scouting a new section of property for hogs. The little 44’s make great walk around guns.

Almost did a drill and tap rail install forward of the receiver on the 77/44 but the chopped Weigand mount worked out very well. My Winchester 94 Trappers wear forward mounted optics and I love my glass out front the best.

I may need to talk to you about the other end of that rail? If you don't have a use for it..........

I'll try to find another option..............Bill Are you planning a forward mount or something similar to my setup? It would be awesome if Ruger would revamp this line and offer a scout version with a forward rail, ghost ring rear sight and the their matte gray finish. They also need to clean up the QC, quite honestly. Glad to finally get mine squared away. Its a fun rifle for the walking woods hunter. The Volquartsen sear was a huge upgrade that got rid of the horrendous factory trigger and make practical field hit potential go WAY up.

I was planning something like yours but yesterday I picked up a 1.5-4.5 scope for it. I'll go that route now. Thanks..............Bill

Unfortunately, both my 77/44s were stolen out of a UPS sort facility in Kansas City on their way to get suppressed a decade ago. Maybe they'll get recovered some day... In the meantime, I like seeing others'!

Thumper, hate to hear your guns were stolen. Thieves suck.
Lefty, thanks for the comment. I did an early season scout/hunt trip last Sunday and carried the 77/44. It's a real joy on walkabout. Pretty happy with the way it turned out.

Walkabout is exactly what it is, mine wears nothing but a leather Montana sling and is 6lbs loaded.
