Midway sells Ruger Birds head grips at a decent price, Thinking it would be fun, on a single 7 or most any black hawk, really. The Stainless ones are obviously stainless steel. Are the Carbon ones Steel or Aluminum ? And do you use the factory strut and spring ? I think Aluminum would be easier to fit, harder to polish. With a 4 5/8ths barrel, it would be handy packing piece, in the woods, with a punch, And cool too, With 7.5 inch it would be sort of odd looking but still cool ! And of Course the 5.5 would split the difference ...tj

I think all of Midways' are steel. As far as how they look and shoot on various barrel lengths,I've sure enjoyed mine.....

My first thought is SHOOT ONE FIRST. They are a cool looking grip and for carrying around but sadly for me that is as far as it goes. I cannot shoot them well and the problems grow as the barrel length and caliber grows. Funny , I can kind of get along with a Thunderer grip on a short barrel SA , but not a Birds head. Go Figure Some do like them so it's definitely a preference thing ,,,,,, but there seems to be no middle of the road.

Had Ruger install mine, and I added a SBH hammer later. Stainless is stainless, carbon is steel. I dont believe they have an aluminum one. If you looking for light weight, the standard aluminum blackhawk frame is fantastic. I have one that Gary Reeder roundbutted and fit to a 7-1/2" 45, never have weighed it, but feel alone is amazing. Between the aluminum frame and weight savings of it being drilled out for a 45, it handles like a short barreled gun with extended sight radius and barrel, packs all day.

Ruger Birdshead grip is nothing but a XR3-RED that is round butted. In fact; you can put XR3-RED grips on a Birdshead Grip Frame, meaning the grip locator pin is in the same location, the dimensions same/same. You can actually build a “filler” piece and run the grip frame XR3-RED or switch it out to the Birdshead grips and go that way. Clear as mud?
Ruger has never made Aluminum Birdshead Grip Frame’s, Stainless and Steel to be blued.

I only own one Ruger birds head on a .44-40 Vaquero: Never could quite get used to how short they are....and I have small hands. I also have a few birds head Sevilles, which I prefer. Basically the same shape but they're a little longer. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Chasing perfection five shots at a time"

I dont care for the traditional plow handle, because the point digs into my palm, a round butt is great for me, and the birdshead fills it nicely as well. The Bisleys and SBH grips are my favorite for a full size handle. Want to try one of Ronnie's Birdsleys, or Reeders TrailRider, basically a birdshead utilizing the full length of the Bisley grip. Goes to show how much of a snowflake we all are, every one different.

Bird's head grips ona single action revolver are Abomination in the eye of the Lord, and the longer the Barrel, the greater the Abomination. This subject has gnawed at my vitals for years, and I have been working on a dissertation on the matter, fit a couple months, but I'll put it all under a separate heading...

I have to agree. I have owned a 1877 colt lighting and a 1878 DA Army. They are gone but I own this Cimmeron Thunderer. I like Colts version of the birds head grip which the Cimmeron is but I really am turned off by Rugers Pelicans bill looking grip. I may not be fair as I never shot Rugers version but I like my Cimmeron. i.postimg.cc/5NHNjBj9/Uberti-C-012399.jpg

The Peacemaker-size New Vaquero in .45 ACP with 3-3/4” barrel, with birdhead grip, is a dandy. Wonderful pocket gun, a little thumper with a bite worse than its bark. David Bradshaw

I prefer the Ruger birdshead gripframe to the plowhandle. For heavy kicking guns, the Bisley is my choice.

jpglsg has some nice looking guns for sure. Subtle custom work,, yet they stand out! As do some of these others here.
The birdshead g/f is one of those things that some either love or hate. As noted above,, not much middle ground. I often chuckle when I see various comments going either way.
What most fail to recognize is the FACT,, that people have different sized hands, different shaped hands & the result is they must find what feels good in THEIR hands. Some folks are blessed with the ability to shoot anything fairly well & enjoy all types,, while others have to seriously search for a properly fitting handgun. With all this,, I'm reminded of the years I spent teaching SCUBA. One piece of equipment that HAD to fit properly was a mask. And again, people's faces are different sizes,, and mask fitting was always required. Again, some folks could wear a lot of different ones, & I recall one guy who had the absolute HARDEST time finding a mask that truly fit his face. He struggled for 2 years until one day, in a Hardware store in Florida,, he found an older model of a known brand, and it fit him perfectly! He bought 2 of them, and never had any more issues.
And as for looks,, everybody has personal tastes. I prefer a Balkey wildlife print over a Monet! I prefer looking at a wild animal vs anything involving people.
My point is like or dislike,, we are not all the same. And if something isn't to a person's personal taste,, then it's much more polite to stay silent than to criticize. You can politely say you dislike something, or it's not your preference,,, but to be rude & make disparaging comments,, is not polite.
Everybody's tastes are different,, and we all should respect that.
