Well, interesting to me at least!
I ordered a pin gauge set last week to check for thread choke and measure the throat diameters in my 45 Colts. I had read Fermin's article on using pin gauges instead of slugging the bore to check for thread choke and it made sense so I thought I'd try it. (I really don't have anything better to do in case you are wondering)
So the pin gauge set arrived this am and I got to work.
I measured the following 45 Colts:
1999 Vintage Ruger Stainless Blackhawk - 45 Colt
- All six throats took a .450 pin gauge. Need to send this one off to open the chamber throats. Any recommendations? - A .443 pin gauge slid all the way through the barrel so no thread choke
2013 Vintage Ruger Stainless Bisley Blackhawk - 45 Colt
- All six chambers took a .452 pin gauge (I had had this cylinder opened up so I was expecting this) - A .443 pin gauge slid all the way through the barrel so no thread choke
2019 Vintage Standard Manufacturing SA - 45 Colt
- All six throats took a .451 pin gauge - A .442 pin gauge slid all the way through the barrel so no thread choke
2007 Vintage Colt SA - 45 Colt
- All six throats took a .456 pin gauge - A .442 pin gauge slid all the way through the barrel so no thread choke
I was glad to see none of these guns had any thread choke and the chamber throats were all consistent.

Fermin can open up your cylinders for you. He did mine! Fantastic job on all of them, sadly I have yet to shoot them, work constraints, but I do have another batch I will be sending him. I sent him 4 and were back in just a few days, that was with the weekend in the way. He is also excellent with keeping you updated and informed.

I second the use of Fermin as a source of opening up a cylinder properly.

Where did you wind up ordering the pin gauge set from? Hello Aware,
I don't like ordering much off Amazon but this is where I found this set. I got the 0.251- 0.500 minus set.
The other sets I looked at were 2-3 times the $$

You got lucky on the Colt SAA. My colts, including an Anaconda went .457-.458

I got a pin gauge set from ENCO, direct sales. Foreign made but no issues. Each gauge is wrapped in a light oil soaked paper so just peel back half of the paper to check chambers. Never had any rust problems.

I have this same set, as they are minus, have found all that I have used to be, .0005 undersize, round and no taper, as checked with calipers and micrometer. Good enough for me anyway!
