Not competition but for fun? My partner has got me interested. He shoots a trapdoor, original Sharps conversion to 50-70, a Shiloh 50-90, Rolling block in 45-70 as well as a couple Win 86's in 40-82 & 40-65. Just found a DF specialties SS falling block action (very similar to the FBW action but with tangs) and thinking of going loooong with it. 40-90 straight, 44-100 SBN, or 45-110. Any thoughts?? In the course of our research we learned Dan Zimmermans shop is on our way home from work. He builds some incredible Hepburns and is a heck of a nice guy to visit with. hepman.com/dzarms/index.html

Gary, I have three and my shooting buddies have several more. Just shooting them is only half of the fun. The part I like the most is getting these old guns to shoot again. I have a Stevens 44 in 25-20 Single Shot. A Ballard #2. It was in 32 long, but the inside of the barrel look like heck. I had it relined back to 32 and chambered for 32-20. And a Dixie/Pedersoli Sharps heavy barreled 45-70. Bill

Like them Bill. Especially the Ballard. I bought a Rolling block with a Numrich "Buffalo" barrel in 45-70. It just showed up today. My partner just loaded some 540 grain paper patch bullets. Cant wait to get to the range.

Yep, got to love those heavy slow movers. My 45-70 is loaded with a Hock nose pore bullet at 530grs with 67grs of 1.5fg Swiss black powder. Magic. Bill

I quite enjoy shoot black powder rounds from my Marlin 1895 Stainless Guide Gun. First couple of times, I'd be setting up in the black powder area of the range I use, and I'd have some fellows tell me it was black powder only. I ignored them as the were about to bust their combined gussets. But when I touched off the first round and all that smoke poured forth, they pretty much felt foolish. Now we talk.
I don't think I'd do it with a blued levergun though. The stainless give a bit of a margin on corrosion protection.

Spent several hours yesterday at DZ arms. We stopped by to drop off my DFS action to have it barrelled (44-90 based on a 45-90 case). The owner Dan Zimmerman showed us his beautiful Hepburn #3 rifles he makes in house. He machines everything but the side lever from bar stock. They are really impressive. We then spent about 3 housrs shooting mini silhouette with pellet guns. They provided the guns and pellets. Had a ball. check out his website. He has a 22 rf ready to go if anyone is interested. www.hepman.com/dzarms/index.htmlbtw he is also wire EDM cutting Ballard hammer springs.

I've two 577/450 Martini's. And the Hepburn someone made a carbine out of in .45-90 Those two rollers rolled on down the road when I was raising money for: I also have this .40-65 but it see's more smokeless than black.

Thanks for the compliments.
This is not a Ballard, this is one I built. It started life as an Uberti. I heavily modified it and added a green mtn barrel in 45. The stock was from a board that yielded two pretty well matching blanks. I am in the process of building a 22 on a winchester low wall winder action. It will match this rifle in every way including using that other stick of wood. This will be the understudy and offhand practice rifle. It is also fun to shoot the .22s at pigs and turkeys between matches.

Nice. Neat Hepburn. I am getting ready to put a side lever on my roller and punch it to 45-90.
