I took the gun apart, down to and including the factory safety, put TWO drops of oil on sear/hammer and Bob's-yer-uncle! Go Monday and try it at the range again.
Upon further study, it still won't cock by racking the slide! GGrrrr.

I FOUND THE ORIGINAL QUESTION TO BE INTRIGUING--WHAT 1911 ISN'T?

I was under the impression that some have proprietary parts. Is that not the case?

You’ve got to begin with good hardware, frame and slide. Then, proper lockwork & parts. And then, the gunsmith must understand the mechanism and interaction of components. As he spoke of hardware and gunsmiths decades ago, Ben “Bear Man” Kilham said, “Some makers know how to make parts; they just don’t know how to put them together." I’ve seen junk 1911’s that cost the owner more money----might as well add heartache----than a proper pistol from our better makers.
To fit a thumb safety, for instance, requires understanding its relation to the sear, etc. Likewise, locking lugs, and so forth. Remember, John Moses Browning brought a lifetime of brilliant design to his .45 Auto. Not to mention Browning’s X-ray vision of mechanics. David Bradshaw

I've fit only 3 safeties and each one gave me fits. It wasn't hard exactly, but 2 were EGW ambi and 1 was Harrison Design and cost enough that I did a lot of putting together and taking apart with minimal metal removal each time. Read, watch the video's, and take your time fitting the thumb safety and it'll work. One thing you more than likely will have to do (make that almost guaranteed to have to do) is remove some off of the sear as that's the important part it's fitted to. Thats assuming it fits the frame in the first place. Get it wrong and you'll need a new sear and have to fit it to the hammer.
I have no idea what's going on with your pistol but the hammer is following the slide while racking? You can reassemble with the sear upside down, but that doesn't sound like what you have going on. Sounds like the sear isn't catching the hammer. Are you sure you have the spring resting where the leaves are supposed to be resting? Each one of those leaves are supposed to rest on a specific part. Without it in front of me, possibly the sear leaf might not be on the sear.
A 1911 will give someone more of David's "Heartache" than a revolver any day in my opinion. It's rewarding doing it yourself, but parts are expensive and knowledge is more expensive.
Sorry for the rambling post and let us know when you find the issue.

Means that if you buy a Merlin pistol, you have to use Merlin parts. Most 1911s can be modified with Wilson, Ed Brown, Les Baer parts and usually with minor fitting.

I've hung out on 1911 forums enough in the past to know that they are all customizable. It just depends upon your budget. They're some guys who further customize a $4k custom. I almost bought one once that started out as a Brown Kobra carry and then had further work done by a who's who of top smiths.

If your hammer is following the slide forward, either your disconnector isn't doing it's job, or your sear to hammer engagement is very poor.

Could it possibly be the magazine? Not sure this one is factory supplied...

I put the factory slide stop back in. With the mag out, hammer cocks manually and when racking the slide every single time. With mag, no joy.

Do you have a second "quality" magazine like one from MeGar, Metalform (OEM for Colt) or Wilson?
Is the magazine dropping freely? It almost sounds like the trigger bow is rubbing on the magazine so the trigger can not move freely. Also does the trigger have an overtravel screw set into the face. If too far in can case sear to hammer problems.
Is there a difference when you rack the slide while holding the trigger back and not having your finger on the trigger at all?

I have three different mags coming from Midway.
Mag drops freely. No overtravel screw.
With no mag, cocks fine with rack, not with trigger being held back.

End of saga (hopefully).
Took the mainspring housing off again, and lo & behold a part of the leaf spring on the left was under the sear! Back together and functioning as beautifully as a 1911 can without actually being fired...that happens tomorrow.
Thanks all.

As for the ACT magazine, it will work okay for a while, then it will split. Depending on what you're doing with it, you may or may not notice. What clued me in with mine is the mag's wouldn't drop free if they had a round in them. I had 5 or 6 (more?) ACT P220 SIG mags and they all cracked. I have one ACT 1911 mag that came with a gun, but knowing that they crack, I only used it as my "Barney mag" for matches. (the mag you load one round into the chamber with, then remove and put in a full mag) I've never fired a single round with the mag in the gun..... and it still cracked. SIG mag, wish I'd taken pictures of all of them. (I have a whole other rant about the company that used to import and dirtibute them, how when I contacted them about the first three that cracked, they told me to "please send them in and we'll replace them", but never did. They just kept lying to me.. "Oh sorry, they'll go out tomorrow.". I hounded them for 4 (?) years till they finally did. They seem to be out of the picture now, which is good)
