Bad day at Black Rock Island! Finally had a chance for range time today; Firelapped my Uberti Cattleman, proved to myself that the GP100 in 327 will shoot EVERYTHING it's fed very accurately, and suffered a major disappointment in the Commander. First shot went dead center of my 15 yard target but did not return to battery! I'm not sure any subsequent shots allowed a follow-up without having to manually cock the hammer. In fact, 90% of the time the slide needed to be pulled back to cock the hammer.
Any idea what I might look at inside that may be the culprit? Fix this problem and I'm a happy camper, don't and I'm carrying my Sig in the truck.

I'd start with oiling it really well. Had a stainless Dan Wesson that was a jam-o-matic the first 100 rounds. Cleaned it really well, oiled it generously with FP10 and it never stopped again. It was a 9mm and it's only gotten smoother since it broke in. I'd give that a try before I tried playing with springs and what not.

It was spotlessly cleaned and well lubed just prior. There were NO jams, outside of failure to cock it performed very well.

So it's not cocking the hammer or returning to battery?

My mistake. Not cocking, but cycling fine other than that. I assumed 'returning to battery' included being ready for the next shot.

Hate to hear that, have heard nothing but good about them, even from a few gunsmiths recommending them.
Sounds like something is slowing the slide, either too stiff recoil spring or something is dragging. This may be the reason of the only 20-50 fired? What ammo are you using?

It's ejecting the empty, picking up and loading the next round, just not staying cocked?

American Eagle ammo.
Cas- I replaced the slide stop and tried a stainless thumb safety from Wilson, but couldn't figure out what to file away or how, so put the factory safety back. Might be me, huh?

Any hitches or pressure points when operating by hand?

I think CAS is correct on the problem.
RIA is known for great no BS customer service. I’d call them.

Any hitches or pressure points when operating by hand? None. When manually cocked & fired it behaves perfectly. I'll call RIA soon and talk to them.

I know I've sen that before but can't remember what was put together wrong.
Do you know your way around inside a 1911? I'd take it apart and put it back together.

You know that closet that many people have that stores raincoats, sports gear, Halloween costumes, boxes of 8-track tapes & grannies china that people looking for something open the door, peer inside and give up the search? That's about the extent of my knowledge of 1911's. I am going back in there though! In the meantime...

The early manufactured American Classic 1911's that I aquired were of exceptional quality that I got especially considering the price.

The action of manually racking the slide just short of the point at which the chambered round is ejected and another feeds from the magazine should be the key, I'm thinking. Won't cock by thumbing hammer back but does so reliably with the slide (but NOT during the firing cycle).
