While I love the look of a beautifully case colored frame, it is one of those things that I can honestly say is "not me". A bit like some guys and Crocs, I suppose...
Ran across a cased Vaquero and it got me thinking, can a (fake) case colored Ruger be blued, or does it need six tons of finish work first? In other words, is it at all practical?

Bill Ruger, Jr., said, “To use your favorite word, David, the Vaquero has a ‘fugitive’ finish. You won’t like it. Especially the way you use it.” I asked whether he knew what process Doug Turnbull used. He said he did not Turnbull’s technique. Bill advised I stick with blue and stainless. I never heard case hardening described as “CCH----color case hardening.” My first question would be, Does it involve heat? If so, how much?David Bradshaw

Ruger will reblue their faux color finish for free I believe, or at least there are reports of them doing so in the past. I have a pair that have turned mostly brown without use that would justify the change.
Enough custom 454, 475, and 510 caliber Ruger single actions have been Turnbull colored (which I believe is CCH) and endured without premature wear or failure I would consider it a proven safe process. I understand Mr. Ruger’s hesitancy to mess with such a well proven process for which he was held legally liable.

I was in Bill Ruger's office when he had the proto-type Vaquero on his desk. He told me he would not bring it out until the case coloring matched what you could find on a Colt. Obviously, they gave up on this and what we saw is nowhere near what true CCH looks like. Yes, David I've always, or at least always heard it referred to as CCH.

I have one that was blued several years ago. Don’t think it took anymore prep work than any re-blue job and it looks good.
