Just bought home my new ruger blackhawk 41 mag with 4 5/8" barrel , my third 41, did the usual, degrease the factory oils and lubed ,went to the range and noticed loading gate would hit the revolver where the little notch is,if I push it forward it will line up and close, but it opens up about an 1/8" or slightly less under recoil, I went back to the house and removed grip frame to check screw alignment and put back together, it seems like something is cantina the gate rearward slightly, it doesn't take much pressure to push it forward to close, and everything looks fine when closed, but it won't stay closed completely when shooting, it's starting to beat up the corner of the notch on the gun, does anyone know what's going on here, can I repair this myself. or should it go back to Ruger. Very disappointed, especially since Ronnie grip frame will be here in a day or two. I have several Ruger single actions , and never seen this. Thanks.

My Bisley 454 does this. I honestly didn’t realize it was an issue

Is the loading gate spring sitting like it should or has it shifted slightly?

With the gripframe in place, look in the frame window and make sure it’s settled in place. Sometimes they can shift.

Zeus you got me looking a little harder and I found the problem, the groove on the loading gate that the spring rides in is non existant, there's like a scribe line where it should be, but it's not there, gonna call Ruger for a new loading gate in the morning.

Good deal. Compared to your others, there is obvious difference?

Let Ruger fix. Ronnie Wells' grip frame will just have to wait for the gun. David Bradshaw

If you have access to Kuhnhausen’s shop manual for Ruger Single actions, there is discussion on pg. 204. The simplest thing to try is bending the vertical arm that puts pressure on the loading detent a little bit backwards so it applies a bit more pressure. Also, be sure you always have 5 rounds in the cylinder when shooting if the cylinder doesn’t have recessed heads to hold the spring in place under recoil.

Whoops! Typed this before I saw you’ve found the problem. Kinda hard for the spring to fit into the detent if the detent hasn’t been machined in!

Yes, called Ruger and the loading gate has to be fit at the factory, so tomorrow it's off to the mother ship, thanks guys for all the replies.
