I purchased a 4 inch 617 new about eleven years ago for revolver practice and to shoot at the local steel match. We had just gone through the first Obama ammo shortage and this was one means to keep shooting. I had run out of reloading components and was not able to shoot competitively for a period of time. The Ruger was not available then. It is such a unique revolver however that it fits a niche that gave a bit of a competitive advantage in my local steel match--i.e., 10 rounds. That said, it has had a host of problems from the beginning. 1. Sights or barrel misaligned--unable to hit POA. 2. Shotgun pattern accuracy. 3. Internal part breakage--crane assembly fell off the gun during reloading in a match. 4. Continual problems with misfires, fixed, problem returns until two years ago when it became progressively worse. There were other problems but would need to check the records. It has been back to S&W at least ten times, often multiple times for the same problems. The most recent fire to ignite issue appears to be fixed as of last summer (took a year to fix, to S&W several times) and I believe was an end shake problem.
The trigger started out pretty good when new but now with all of S&W's tweaking makes a Ruger trigger seem real good.
The current round count is just under 17,000 rounds. It is still not real accurate but it is a good practice gun and works pretty well in the steel match.

Axehandle, it has been a couple years. How has the Apex held up? Any misfires? Is the trigger pull better than factory? Thanks.

Lots of irons in the fire here... Last time I had the 4 inch 617 out it ran good. Heed the note about NOT dry firing that comes with the extended firing pin. The extra length will put a burr on the edge of your chambers.

AxeHandle, thanks for the reply. So do you think the extended firing pin resolved the light strike problem?

Don't think it did. FWIW I dry fire my guns. The extended FP was bad for me...
