Want ideas on cleaning the grunge around the wrist/tang area of a '92 winchester 32-20 stock. Is it as simple as using mineral spirits and steel wool? I don't want a pristine refinished stock.

Not much experience on this sort of thing with guns but I wouldn't start out with steel wool. I would try the mineral spirits and a toothbrush first. Then, progress up through stronger solvents and more aggressive scrubbers as necessary to get the degree of cleanliness you desire.
Sometimes, if you can get the crud dissolved but can't get it brushed out of the pores, you can lift it by keeping the area wet with solvent and simply tapping it with your finger ...repeatedly. Very tedious but sometimes it helps.
Wish I had something more specific to offer. Hope someone else will chime in with better help. I think the key though is lots of PATIENCE. Good luck.
