Small before small was cool. Can call it classic now.

This is the Detonics Pocket-9, the first commercially made sub-compact 9x19mm. It's a DA/SA auto the size of a PPK. Triggers were usually kinda' bad, and worse- it was a 26oz. straight-blowback. With aluminum grips. Easily the most unpleasant-to-shoot gun I've ever fired. I don't know how many of these damn things I assembled when I worked for Detonics, but I know how many I test-fired: too many. They've had one on the shelf at a LGS for months now, at what I suppose is a reasonable price. I almost feel like I should buy it and shoot it regularly as penance for all of the misery I inflicted on others... ***** Michael.... with all the bullet work you’ve laid out, ballistic gelatin and all, I recommend you have a pull of Mother Fletcher’s Group Tightener and forget that straight-blowback 9mm Detinics Sewer Pipe. You got to be a hero to fire a single magazine out of a half-pint jackhammer like that. Let alone test fire guns coming off assembly. If you’re going to buy a thing like that, invest in a straightjacket to go with it. That gun really underlines how the tiny DELAY in delayed blowback softens recoil. And without a locked breech, the slide has to be a brick. David Bradshaw

I really wanted one of those when they first came out, in the mid/late 80's? That was during the Miami Vice era and the Smith & Wesson autos were front and center to me. I couldn't afford much besides a S&W 686 then so it was all a "want" anyway.
I didn't really know too much about autos then and the Detonics sure seemed cool. With their Combat Master and all, what young knothead wouldn't want a small 9mm. Wish I had the Combat Master, but not so much on the Pocket 9.
Until David mentioned it was a blowback, I'd forgotten that. Back then I didn't know what that really meant anyway. My hard won knowledge tells me that youth is wasted on the young....

The one Detonics I don’t want , there are always a bunch and accessories on GB and more accessories on EBay. Not like trying to find a 451 Detonics barrel lol. About 2 or 3 years ago, I traded for a nice clean original Detonics , growing up watching Miami vice I always wanted one. It was nice but just too thick and super small grip frame fir my hands and their not large. I had to sell it but got good money for it. Now I’m building my first officers size gun but can’t get to function never had an issue with my govt or commander colts. I would like an original Detonics service master and target master someday .
