DAVID: FROM MY IHMSA DAYS I REMEMBER "HIGH SKY - SHOOT HIGH, LOW SKY - SHOOT LOW". I HAVE SUSPECTED THAT SUN vs. OVERCAST MAY ALSO EFFECT WINDAGE, SO YOUR POST RE THE EFFECTS OF SUN IS WELCOME INFORMATION, MANY THANKS. ALSO THE TIP ABOUT "ZERO in overcast whenever possible" IS GREAT TO KNOW. ***** Overcast acts as a LIGHT DIFFUSER----in the words of chronograph guru Dr. Kenneth Oehler. Light can be bright in over cast, or dull as dishwater. Clouds, moisture in the air, acts too disperse light rays evenly. ZERO a revolver under a strong, directional sun, then see what happens when you shoot at another location, or under very different light conditions. I kept a notebook with my M1 Garand specifically to review specific conditions. And ALWAYS ZERO WINDAGE at the END of a MATCH. Years later, with the inception of IHMSA silhouette, the habit spilled over into shooting steel. Folks would come up to me, how I was going to deal with the light conditions, or wind. Some ranges, such a cloud-blotched Oak Ridge, Tennessee, or sun-baked ranges in Texas, etc., required cocktailing your sights. When you hold & squeeze DEAD NUTS, believe it when POI ain’t where it’s supposed to be. Read conditions before the shot. No one becomes a sharpshooter by chasing their last shot. Marksmanship is a game played in the present. I would never celebrate a shot before it’s made. That’s for comic books. David Bradshaw

GOT TO DO SOME CHRONOGRAPHING WITH THE 2.5 INCH 45 COLT BULLDOG YESTERDAY AND TODAY (3/30/20) 1)MISSOURI BULLET COMPANY ("MBC") PC'ed 255gr .452 SWC, STARLINE CASES, 9grs UNIQUE, WITH FED 150 PRIMERS - 3 SHOT AVERAGE 791fps, WITH WLP PRIMERS - 5 SHOTS AVERAGE 874fps; 2) OREGON TRAIL BULLET COMPANY ("OTBC") 250gr .452 RNFP, STARLINE CASES, 9grs UNIQUE, FED 150 PRIMERS, 4 SHOTS AVERAGE 866fps (SAME LOAD IN A 8 3/8ths MODEL 25 CUSTOM BY JRH - 5 SHOTS AVERAGE 996fps); AND 3) MBC PC'ed 250gr .452 RNFP, 9grs UNIQUE, FED 150's, 4 SHOTS AVERAGE 839fps (SAME LOAD IN THE MODEL 25: 5 SHOTS AVERAGE 974fps). I WAS HAPPY WITH THE VELOCITY RANGES. NEED TO TRY LOAD No. 1) WITH THE WLP PRIMERS ON PAPER, IF IT IS ACCURATE AND I CAN TWEAK THE FS TO GET POA AND POI TO MATCH UP IT WOULD BE HARD NOT TO GO WITH IT.

I don't own the .45 Colt Bulldog, but I do own the .44 Special version. I added a Crimson Trace laser grip to it (great price on the laser direct from Charter Arms).
I will own another one or two in the future, since I like this one so well.

I had one in 44 special. Could not keep it in time to save my life. Went back and was repaired 4 times. After the 4th, I sold it off. Just got tired of it. I wish you better luck with your 45 than I had with my 44.

THE MATTS 250gr .452 WAD CUTTERS CAME IN YESTERDAY, WOW, WHAT A NOSE ON THOSE MF'ers. WITH THE BIG NOSE THEY WILL SEAT A TAD SHALLOWER IN THE CASE THAN TYPICAL 250 AND 255 CAST BULLETS. GOING TO LOAD UP SOME OVER 9grs OF UNIQUE, USING WLP PRIMERS, AND TRY TO PLAY WITH THEM THIS WEEK IN THE BULLDOG AND A 5 INCH SMITH.

Am always glad to see someone else have good things to say about C.A's little cannons. Am up early here, and yes my 3" SS Classic is in my fleece vest pocket. I have had one issue with mine, years ago when after I got home from camp, I found the last 2 pieces of the ejector rod missing. Open end holster. A call to Charter Arms had the parts in my hands fast, no charge. I check those parts more often now. My niece and her husband, 2 great nieces live in a N.W. burb of Richmond Va.. I very much like her man. He was telling me that they have bears now too. So I gifted him my Boomer, 50 rds and told him to get some speedloaders and strips.

I should retire and have more time to keep up.

I HAVE EVERY NOW AND THEN BEEN WORKING ON LOADS FOR THE CHARTER XL 45 COLT, 2.5 INCH, BULLDOG, USING THE MATT'S 250gr WC CAST BULLET AND TRAIL BOSS POWDER. TODAY I TRIED 8grs OF TB, WLP PRIMERS, STARLINE CASES AND THE MATT's IN MY BULLDOG. SHOOTING OFF A REST AT 25 YARDS 1st 3 WENT 2.25 INCHES CENTER TO CENTER, LOW AND RIGHT, WITH 2 @ .75 OF AN INCH C-C. THE I FIRED 2 3 SHOT GROUPS AND A 7th SOLO SHOT, 4 WERE 1.625 INCHES C-C. THE 7th SOLO HAD ALREADY BEEN IN THE REVOLVER FOR THE FIRST 9 SHOTS AND SHOWED MINIMAL BULLET PULL. AGAIN LOW AND TO THE RIGHT. DO NOT KNOW THE VELOCITY BUT WHO CAN ARGUE WITH THE ACCURACY, AND, AT CLOSER RANGES, WITH A BIG WC BULLET, THE LOADS FELT PLENTY POTENT FOR DEFENSIVE PURPOSES.
I DID SOME CALCULATIONS AND AM GOING TO ASK A BUDDY TO TAKE .028 OF AN INCH OFF OF THE FS, WHICH SHUD GET ME CENTERED FOR HEIGHT AT 25 YARDS. AFTER THE HEIGTH ADJUSTMENT THEN I WILL SEE WHAT LEFT TO RIGHT SIGHT ISSUES I MAY STILL HAVE AND, IF NECESSARY, "MAKE A PLAN".
MAN, I LIKE THIS GUN.
