This isn’t so much an “I want this, how do I make it happen?” as it’s just one of those random things that pops into my head when I’m in that half awake, half dozing state before the alarm goes off.
I’m pretty sure the .450 Bushmaster is the closest answer even though it’s above .44 Mag power level as best I recall and .458 SOCOM even more so.
Is there another factory option with off the shelf ammo I’m not thinking of?
Thanks!

I'm not utterly familiar with it, but there is a 44 auto mag that is a rimless 44 magnum. As far as factory off the shelf options, I would think that 450BM would be the closest to that for a straight walled cartridge.

while it sounds lots "smaller" the 10mm Magnum would be awful close to the 44 magnum in a rimless case... being the 44 is actually .429

Case head size and magazines to feed it are the biggest obstacles to overcome in the AR platform.

45 Win Mag as well as 50AE, there are several other rounds that will also do it. There have also been several small companies that have actually done standard 44 Mag uppers using Desert Eagle mags. To meet your requirements the 50AE is easy to do and runs with 223 mags.

I forgot and left it out of my criteria by mistake, but a straight wall cartridge would be preferred. I know there were some companies doing .40S&W AR uppers and I think there's even a couple doing DI instead of blowback so it wouldn't surprise me to find an off the shelf 10mm upper built around Glock mags. 10 Mag would be an issue unless it can be made to feed from an existing mag or something like the Mean Arms Endo Mags.

There have also been several small companies that have actually done standard 44 Mag uppers using Desert Eagle mags. Tromix offered them at one point. I seem to recall Tony Rumore mentioned they either sold less than 10 or none at all but I forgot where I saw that info to double check the numbers.

Tony may well have only built 10, they are not something alot of folks are willing to play with. With the 45 Super, 460 Rowland there are easier ways to reach that power level. I hunt with a wildcat called the 458 RMW from RMWXTREME.COM it is the 50AE/50 Thunder Saber (rebated rim 50AE) necked to .458, from my 10.5" barrel I run a 300gr bullet @ 1650fps and it is a hog hammer. I like it over the 458 SOCOM because brass is easy to get/make and with the smaller case I have better load density with 300gr-400gr bullets. Yes the SOCOM will push the same weight bullets faster as well as heavier bullets but with alot more recoil and since most hogs I hunt are 350lb or less it works great. It was also mentioned about the 440 Corbon and the new 429 DE, both have been built in the AR15, I have shot the 440 Corbon and the only issue was factory ammo and consistent dimensions and load psi (some factory 440 ammo I shot had no pressure signs and in the same box of factory ammo other rounds flattened primers, as well as I had some rounds that wouldn't chamber.) I hope the 429 DE ammo will be more uniform and not all over the map. Both rounds could be great in the AR15 but I feel you may have to handload for them.

Sometimes the fun is in following the rabbit hole to it's conclusion, logical or otherwise. A .45 Super full size M&P or USP and then a 10"-12" AR45 pistol to go with it. THAT'S the kind of illogical-but-it's-got-style-points-for-days conclusion I'm talking about!

Agreed, I have if I remember correctly 4 uppers in 50GI, 2 encore barrels, a MAC 10 converted to 50GI and would love to get a DA revolver converted to 50GI. So I have chased that rabbit into alot of holes. But I am of the mind if you want something built and have the means, then go for it, I am not one to worry about resale or if others think it is a good idea or not. I am also not one to push cartridges to max all the time (if I were in Grizzlie county I would carry the biggest caliber/hottest load I could shoot accurately fast, and make sure I have as many rounds as possible) The 50GI MAC10 I had built just because I thought it would be fun to shoot since the MAC is a heavy piece and shooting 300gr bullets at 800-850fps sounded like a great match, which it is.

I realize you prefer a straight wall case, but I have been using the 375 SOCOM with cast bullets for 5 years now. I cannot assure you that I am at or over 44 magnum rifle ballistics but I bet I am! Using a 238 grain hollow point cast gas checked bullet for over 100 kills, I have yet to recover one. I have found the nose rings left behind, but not the base portion of the bullet. My muzzle velocity for these bullets is 1920 fps average and run around 2 MOA (which is acceptable to me for what I am doing with it).

We made six AR-15 uppers in 44 Magnum back in 2000. The 440 CorBon uppers were made from 1998 to 2001 with around 12-15 made.
We've been working on AK's in 458 SOCOM for awhile now and have quite a few made up. There is also one in works chambered in .475 Linebaugh Long. It hasn't been test fired yet, but it looks very promising.

A .475 AK? Oh dear...it’s almost enough to make me consider getting back into the platform. . Thanks for the info on the .44 uppers. I might make those a unicorn search if I ever hit the lottery.
