I’m looking to have the 5 1/2” barrel on my stainless Bisley 45 cut back to 4 5/8”, and then the front sight put back on.
I live in West Virginia. Any recommendations on a gunsmith that might be close to me that could do it for a reasonable price? Also within a reasonable time without a long waiting list? I would prefer not to have to ship it across the country if I don’t have to.
I’m aware of some of the big name smiths like Bowen and Linebaugh, but I’m not sure if there are any closer with no waiting list.
Thanks.

I think good and no waiting list don't go in the same sentence. I think Horvath is in Ohio and Clements is in VA. Last I heard, Clements is not taking any work. Might want to just bite the shipping bullet and send it off. Guess you could Google, gunsmiths near me.

Andy Horvath is located in Northeast Ohio. Don't know what the wait or cost would be for such a simple job. I'm certain someone here could provide you with his contact info.

If you have a friendly FFL they can ship cheaper then you can. Mine charges me 25 bucks plus the postage and sends the USPS. Two of the plus is he is there every day to receive the return package and is just 4 blocks away! PS Jack Huntington is great to work with!

John Gallagher in Jasper, AL is great; good timeline and fair prices. I heard David Clements may be cutting back on all but full builds, now. He does great work, too. www.facebook.com/gallagherfirearms/

I had Jack Huntington at JRH add a 4 5'8 octagonal barrel to my .45 Colt New Model Bisley Blackhawk. He also added a custom front interchangeable sight with his custom base, and added custom front base. It was completed much faster than I had hoped for, and his work is awesome. It was also relatively inexpensive, and worth every cent. The revolver I refer to is shown in my avatar.

I've had good success getting things done well and quickly with Bob Cogan at APW and also Mark Zamsky (used to be at APW, now has his own shop (Precision Custom Plating and Engraving)

Thanks. ***** I would not consider shortening barrel without 1) slugging the bore to feel for any loose or tight spots; 2) inspecting forcing cone, and 3) targeting. Providing all three satisfy, I would then shorten. If the bore slugs smooth and even, yet the forcing cone is deep, rough, and/or off kilter, the barrel is pulled, shoulder set back on a lathe. barrel shoulder is set back to where it will hand tighten to 10 or 12-degrees BTDC. The forcing cone is recut on a lathe. If there is a compression ring in the bore at junction of frame, pass the same slug----indexed to the rifling as before----through the bore. If there is no thread choke with barrel removed, it won’t reappear under the above specified THREAD TIMING. David Bradshaw

If you don't have the ability to carry out these tests, at least instruct whomever you use to do so.
