Getting more and more excited about this one...
I bid on and won an auction last week for a 1945 SA Garand (https://auctions.thegunrunner.com/lo...-mfg-1945-wwii). Although it's not a CMP purchase, the description and photo's looked good (The serial number shows it actually being an October 1941 Springfield), so I rolled the dice and am hoping when it arrives I end up with a really nice shooter. Since it's a pre-Pearl Harbor rifle, it likely saw some action. There's a real good chance the rear sight, barrel and bolt have been replaced during an arsenal re-build or two, but I won't be sure about anything else until it arrives. If this battle rifle could only talk.
Thinking I may cerakote it in blue camo, put it in a folding plastic stock and add a scout scope rail so I can mount a cheap imported red dot sight on it.
Just kidding, and you now have my written permission to slap me silly of I ever did anything like that to a piece of American history like this. If anything, I'd send it off to DGR for an inspection and re-finish, but the more I look at the auction photos, the more I'm leaning to keep it as it is.
I'll post pics when I have it in-hand.
Have a safe and Happy New Year!

Stump ****** The old DCM (Director of Civilian Marksmanship) M1 Garand’s were arsenal rebuilt. Examples I’ve handled and shot are top equipment. During arsenal overhaul, all sorts of parts were replaced, sometimes everything except the receiver. The M1 Garand is an eminently rebuildable rifle, and it is a rare rifle that wasn’t overhauled. Contrast with gun show junk, where horrendous examples of M1’s disgrace the tables. At all hazards, avoid the junk, which includes rifles given to foreign countries. TIMING is everything, and that includes timing or tuning the operating rod. When you look for an M1, buy right or don’t buy at all. Otherwise, you get burned. Talking with Ronnie Wells the other night, he describes a 1941 Springfield Armory M1 Garand brought home from battle, probably in a barracks bag, which escaped the arsenal rebuild. A real rarity for an M1. In the hands of a s harpshooter the M1 is an offhand masterpiece, a wand. David Bradshaw

Thanks Gentlemen,
That's a looker squawberry! Apparently they received quite a few of them that had never been unpacked. I'm sure it'll go for a pretty penny at auction.
I'm hoping to make it out to the Talladega CMP facility someday to hand pick one, in the meantime, this SA and my '43 Winchester will keep me smiling.

There's no way you own a '43 Winchester or we would have seen it!

Oops, hope this makes up for the oversight... The stock that it was wearing when it got here was carved on and beyond repair, so I started looking for a replacement. Original Winchester GI stocks cost a mint, and since this is a shooter too, I opted to go with a java laminate from Dupage trading. The fit was excellent and really cleaned the rifle up and it makes for good "deck camo" too. I'm 6'-4" with LONG arms, so the added buttpad made a huge difference in shooting comfort/fit. I've never gauged it, but an M2 FMJ bullet will show between 3/16" and 1/4" between the muzzle and the case mouth, so I think it's likely low on the ME scale too. Since I've got the bug again for Garands, I might shoot the Winchester on the 1st at our annual local fun shoot. I'll send a picture if the two of them together when the other arrives and is freed from CA Gun Prison. Stump
