They have the TAC-14 with the 6 round magazine now, too.

We bought three of these when they first came out for our security group. My alternate and I are the shotgun instructors for the project and he leans more than me toward new gimmicks. My first time at the range with it the first shot the magazine dropped out. Not because of a faulty catch but because some genius put the magazine release right at the front of the receiver, right where the meat of your hand will activate it when you cycle the action. Everyone on our crew who has shot the new 870's has had the same thing happen. We all had to consciously move our hand farther forward on the forend to keep from activating the magazine release. Remington would have been far wiser to put the magazine release on the side of the well like an AR15 rather than the front.

Saw Kentucky gun co now has them for 178.
Not sure what to think of the detachable box magazines on shotguns. Haven't handled one. Does it mess up the balance / handling?

I'm sure some of the guys who live and breath tactical shooting love the 870DM. I find them to be cumbersome and not well balanced. Although I've taught tactical shotgun for many years, I don't shoot tactical shotgun for fun or competition. It is part of what I have to do in my job but I don't live and breath it. Some guys do and that's fine. I am good at it but it's not my passion.
I've used the standard 870 for all my career and the 870DM just doesn't work well for me. A bad case of an old dog and new tricks I suppose. Honestly though if they have them that cheap, buy it. You won't get hurt at that price. You may love it.

Thoughts... Unless I missed something, the only way to feed it is via the magazine, or singly. The traditional mag tube only serves as the forend attachment and you can't feed/cycle through the tube if you've lost your DM.
Am I wrong here?
If I have it right, I'll stick with the traditional (and second nature) protocol for adding rounds in the "standard" build 870 with side saddle extra rounds. I've shot 870s too long and the "old way" is built into muscle memory.
We got the 870DM in our store (before the brain trust took all firearms and hunting stuff from our store), and NO ONE ever bought one. They eventually were marked down to get them out of the way.
Food for thought
D.

For me, that's a visual travesty on par with a Picatinny Rail on a Savage 99.
