Yeah, I swore several years ago that I wasn't going to add any additional cartridges to the mix. I lied to myself. The .40 S&W just kind of leaves me cold, though. I've owned two and sold them both.

I like the 40. Think its a great round. I don't have one at the moment as I like the 10 more. But I would like a 40 barrel for my G20SF.

I don't have a lot of interest in the .40 but I keep looking at them because with all the LE trade ins it's cheap to get into one, a 9mm conversion barrel is just a click away and unlike 9mm and .22, .40 wasn't that hard to find during the last ammo panic.

Yup... My G23s all wear Alpha Wolf 9mm conversion barrels. All came to me as virtually like new G23s for $299. G22s on sale now. I plan to pick up a couple of those. Magnet mounted over all the closet doors in the house keeps them secure and out of sight. This dang 40 cal G35 was one of those good deals that was paralleled with a good buddy deal on the KKM barrel and ZEV ninja parts.

I was a .40 S&W holdout until I got one for competition. Brass was free,, and components were cheaper than 45. I also own some 10mm guns & in that diameter,, I prefer it. Then,, of course,, there is the .41 mag,,,,,,,,,,!
But the .40 has it's place & as noted,, brass & ammo availability is an attractive quality.

I just got hooked this month. I've had a 40 in a commemorative Browning Hi Power for several years, but it doesn't see much range time as I am a revolver guy.
The 10mm has caught my attention and when I saw a T/C 10mm barrel on the SWForum, the path was set.
Next came the Dillon conversion kit, then the new Dillon die heads, then the RCBS die set, then a RCBS sizer/decap die, then two types of bullets, then the Starline cases, then some 10mm range brass, then the 40 range brass, then we prep the range brass, and then we pull, pull, pull the handle. I told my lady it was lucky I already had the powder.
Off on another quest for What, I'm not quite sure.
Prescut I'm already addicted to the 357Max and Mag, and the 32's (32-20, 32H&R, 327fedmag). Please don't tell the 45 colts, or the 44's I wrote that.

The 40 came into my view as a competition round 20 years ago. It didn't take long to figure out it is a premier auto pistol round because it offers reasonable bore diameter/bullet weight and high mag capacity. After my IPSC days were through, I bought an early M&P40. Being designed for the 40 from the ground up, it is excellent. My first experience with it was at a week long park ranger training event. Having mistakenly signed up to shoot the combat match (thinking it was the state police qual course), I competed anyway. As it turned out, several of the regulars were 3 gun competitors and the match was hotly contested each year. Much to their disappointment I somehow pulled off an overall match win with the M&P40 and factory Federal 180 FMJ. Rut Roh Raggie. The M&P40 went on to be carried officially for several years.
It is amusing that today's tactical types seem to have forgotten physics. Jeff Cooper, Skeeter Skelton and Elmer Keith had this right decades back, yet today we hear an endless stream of poppycock from "enlightened" people that can't seem to reason that the FBI reversed itself on the 40 because they have large numbers of urbanite recruits that are lowest common denominator people due to the times and faulty internal policies.

It is somewhat amazing how much a 9 mm Luger cart can do ( with the correct loads) But the fact is that the 40 is just bigger. But not too big. With all the illegal and bad crap that the FBI has been involved in for the past 12 years and before. The 9 dogma is just that. Dogma. [br it does hold more bullets. Which isn't bad. But. The 40 S&W puts 357 mag type power in a small autoloading package.

a 9mm conversion barrel is just a click away I was reminded this is true unless it's a .40 BHP or something like an STI 2011. A conversion barrel might be out there but it sure won't be a drop in...

I love my 40 fnp straight shooter fully supported chamber I run it hot with longshot. You can get it to 10mm velocity with carbine rifles and with cast can be a self protection woods gun.( I know there is better ) but you make do with what you have. I will say it is snappy on the wrist compared to the 9mm or 45acp. 10 mm hot loads are worse so it's a niche gun almost there. I don't dislike any pistol but some people that are recoil sensitive will never go above 9mm. I won't touch a 45-70 Derringer again lol.

It was a looong uphill battle. The ONLY thing the 9 vs 45 crowd could agree on is they didn't want a third dog in the fight.

Isn't that the truth. For 2 legged predators or small ( 250 lbs or less) 4 legged predators. I think the 40 S&W with a 155 gr bullet would be great. My first 40 was a S&W Sigma. I think it was a great gun. But it wouldn't feed a certain brand of 180 gr truncated cone . All other brands it did great with. A friend's 4006 wouldn't reliably feed that same 180 gr TC ammo. It seems Smith and Wesson figured it out by the time they came out with the M&P .
