Ruger Bisley spur welded to a Freedom Arms. Very nicely done. Who is the artist responsible?

Alan Harton took on this task which he described as adding an Edsel grill to a Rolls Royce. He said it was NOT a fun job to take on.

Robb, It only took buying a camera to master it! What caliber is the revolver? Any problems with the hammer striking the web of the hand in recoil? Enough room with a cocked hammer to wear a glove? Thanks, Ken

It is only a 41 mag Ken. The same question was raised by Fermin as to striking the web during fire. I can't say since the gun is still at Alans but I don't see why there would be a problem with it. The grip frame fits mean about as well as the Ruger bisley does and we both know that is what all the custom 475 and 500 Linebaugh's are done on as well as the Longs. I guess we will see in a week or so.

Aw shucks. I thought that was YOUR photo artistry. Certainly there will be no recoil problem with the .41, and like you, I don't THINK there will be with anything else. Thanks for posting.

Alan Harton took on this task which he described as adding an Edsel grill to a Rolls Royce. He said it was NOT a fun job to take on. I like it, I'd like to see a pic of the whole gun to see how all the lines flow with it on there. I have been waiting for Alan to get this one done so I could decide if I wanted one like it. Alan didn't want to do another. He made his recommendation for simply lowering the factory spur on mine and I agreed with him. Hope I'm not talking out of turn on this Robb - Guys, there are two alignment pins set into the hammer and the spur to keep the two disparate thicknesses of hammer in place while welding. Thats while welding a casting to bar stock, IIRC. Sorry, I love to know the "how's" of things. I think I talked to Alan more about your hammer that day than my project...

No problem Aggie. Alan and I talked about this some more last night and he felt he had a better handle on the job if he decided to take on another one. I told him I was glad because I'm going to ask him to do it again when I get another FA. I wondered if pins would be used to hold stuff in place while welding. That would make sense. The first iteration of of this didn't look near as nice but Alan was trying to make the weld invisible. Once I told him I didn't care if the weld fillett was visible under the spur he said it was much easier.

Robb, did you supply the Bisley hammer also, or does Alan have them available? Thanks.

Once a Bisley Fan always a Bisley Fan ! I like it . You should send a picture to Freedom Wyoming and get thier reaction. I know what it's like to ask a smith to do something against thier nature...but what the hey! it's your gun. My own " something different " Bob and Cactus think I'm nuts.

I did provide the bisley hammer. I've found I am more comfortable if I collect and then send as many of the special parts for a custom build as possible myself. This gun originally went to Alan to serve as the template for the 414 Supermag topstrap treatment.
Bob Baker had requested seeing the pictures once the gun was done so I have already sent these to him. I don't expect to see a bisely hammer option on a FA but I told Bob I think it would be a neat idea that they could charge appropriately for.

Now that's slick. Maybe FA will offer something like that as an option down the road. -Lee www.singleactions.com

I like that too, it's a nice idea. Maybe one of these days, I'll see if I can get someone to put a SBH spur on my Security Six hammer...if they can get the ergonomics to remain basically the same. That sharp, square spur that Ruger insists on putting on all their double action guns is the only thing I don't care for about my SS.

I agree totally on the Ruger DA hammers. I had him try to install a commander hammer on my SP but the clearance wasn't there so he semi-bobbed it.
