"They" are implementing new gun legislation here in NM like drunken sailors....
My FFL asked me a question tonight...
If my FFL receives a gun for me that has been converted, say from a .44 magnum to a .475 Linebaugh, he logs in the serial number but what caliber designation does he record, the original (.44) or what it is now (.475 Linebaugh)?
We've always used what the gun is currently marked as but not a bad question.

All my FFL's have used the current caliber. But, all of the guns had been remarked to reflect the conversion. I've seen some converted but not remarked. That might be a interesting dilemma!
I once bought a Rock Island 1911, delivered to a local FFL who was a practicing lawyer. The serial number was poorly marked/almost illegible. It gave him pause, but he finally recorded his best guess.
Next time you call Hamilton to check on a build, ask him your question. He's the closest thing we have to legal counsel in matters of converted handguns.

There are so many dang guns out there I don't think the ATF has any means of checking or even caring about what caliber one is. Think about switch barrel guns like contenders too. I bought one with a 22LR barrel and sold the barrel off, when it's with me it could be 4 different calibers at any given time.

I use what the gun actually is. See it a lot with ARs that have 5.56 marked lowers, but are now something else. When dealing with a lower without an upper (or a frame without barrel/cylinder/chamber/etc), I go with what is marked on the frame, if anything.

To run with cubrock's AR example, how does your FFL log in AR lowers factory marked "Multi" for caliber?

I bought a lower back in October or November and my FFL marked it as multi-caliber IIRC.

To run with cubrock's AR example, how does your FFL log in AR lowers factory marked "Multi" for caliber? You enter it as "Multi."

Something to think about if you ever want to carry it concealed on your CCW license. Register it as current caliber / cartridge. I don't think DOJ cares what it was, but what it is currently.
