Would this conversion be possible ? 10mm to 38-40 in the GP 100

THE 38-40 IS A BOTTLE NECK, IF IT IS NOT BIGGER AROUND AT ITS WIDEST DIAMETER THAN A 44 SPECIAL. MAYBE, I HAVE BEEN CURIOUS ABOUT THIS MYSELF.

Looking at Ruger's website, the 10mm is a six-shooter, while the 44 Special is a five-shooter, it doesn't look to me that the 10mm has enough material in the cylinder to work. The good thing is the sixshot doesn't have the bolt notches directly over the chamber, but I would think that a conversion to 38-40 would need a custom cylinder. This is all speculation on my part, because I don't have either revolver to measure.
What I found by doing a quick Bing search, is the major dimensions of the 38-40 cartridge, are closer to the 45 Colt, than the 10mm. I believe a custom five shot cylinder would be needed. But this is a question the custom gunsmiths can answer.
Mobjack No gunsmith, but I was a machinist in a previous life.

Well, I sent this question to David Clements and he said the cylinder on the GP 100 is to small in diameter to allow the rims of the 38-40 to fit without bumping into each other. So, to answer my own question, no, not possible.

Why not punch it out to 10 mag?

Cylinder is too thin at the stop notches for the pressures capable in 10 mag... I have a S&W 610 that I had chambered for 10 mag, which is an N frame & slightly bigger than the GP... I decided to do a rimmed 10mm conversion on my GP ( Dave will not chamber the GP in 10 mag ) I chose the wild cat 10mm Rimmed, just to keep the extra margin of safety the 10mm offers over the 41 Special, in cylinder wall & forcing cone thickness... 41 special is an option on the GP from Clements, as the 41 is a lower pressure round than the 10mm

Change cylinders? Like the Buckeye Blackhawk.. THE CYLINDER IS TOO SMALL FOR SIX .38-40s AND CUSTOM CYINDER WOULD NEED TO BE A FIVE-SHOOTER WHICH WOULD REQUIRE CHANGING THE GEOMETRY OF THE SIX-SHOOTER SO NO SWAPPING OF CYLINDERS

Jeff Quinn opened his GP100 10mm out to 10mm Mag. He wrote it up on Gun-Blast.
