Not really evil, but "wholesome and fulfilling" plan never gets any airtime, does it?
Anyway, here's a thought I had that I am not going to take advantage of, but someone might want to.
1) Buy a .45 Colt New Vaquero 2) buy a CDNN .357 anniversary 3) put the 45 colt barrel/cylinder into the anniversary and add a new front sight. 4) rechamber the 357 anny cylinder to .44 special and add a new barrel. 5) remark frames, refinish. 5.1) ( John says: put SBH hammers on both)
If you wanted both of these items (New Vaquero .44 SPL, , mid frame .45 Colt flattop) this is really a pretty economical way to get them. You don't end up handicappped on cartridge OAL like you would if you rechambered a .357 anniversary to .45 Colt.

Wouldn't it make more sense to start with a .45 Colt New Vaquero and a .44 Special Flattop since the .44 Special is a standard catalog item for 2010?

If you can get one, sure. I could revise the plan when they hit the shelves. for what I just paid on my .41 special / mag conversion on a anny .357, I'm thinking it doesn't matter much, as there are (probably literally) tons of take off .44 barrels out there. the cheapness of the anny 357's right now offsets the extra work. lets say that for my .41 mag conversion, the work to convert it cost less than the base gun - and I got the base gun used on a good deal. YMMV

I really like the idea of a .41 Magnum on the medium frame. I have the large frame Flattop in .41, and a Marlin .41. When finances permit I am going to pick up standard .41 Blackhawk from Glen. A medium .41 would be icing on the cake.
You are right though, the conversions can be done your way pretty easily as well.
