Not sure if I'm posting this in the right place. I'm sorta new to handguns and I have a single six. The problem I have is I have a real hard time hitting anything with it because I can't see the the sights as well as I think I should. Nothing wrong with the handgun as my son can shoot it just fine, but then his eyes are 30 years younger too.
A local shooter had a S&W 22 that I tried out. I can't remeber the model number, but anyway I could shoot it considerable better than the single six because the sights worked so much better and didn't fuzz out on me.
I know I want to replace the sights on the single six, but I have no clue what would be better. Would someone who had similiar problems please give me pointer or two on which sight would be better?
Sure would appreicate it,
Vern

Vern,
Does your Singe Six have adjustable sights or a rear sight like a Colt 1911? If it is adjustable by turning small screws, you can try a Millett rear sight. The flat blade will give you a better (and larger) sight picture than the Ruger factory sight.
A lot of folks don't care for Millett sights, but I bought a single Six that already had one mounted and it was very nice. On a larger caliber revolver perhaps it isn't the best choice, most fellows seem to go for the Bowen sights on their custom big-bores.
Hope that helps.....

That does help. I should have said it has adjustable sights, sorry. I'll try a Millett sight. Like I said, I'm a complete novice on this.
Thank you.

You could use "Whiteout"-correction fluid,or flourescent orange or green to see the front sight better.

I've tried the Millets, but I prefer the Bowens. I know the Bowen sight cost more, But it's a much better sight. Bill

I'll suggest a change in front sight as well. Some of the Ruger semi-auto pistols come with an "undercut" style of front sight instead of the standard "ramp" style used on the Super Single-Sixes in the New Model era. These sights are simply screw attached to the barrel and are easy to swap.

Carl, that was a very good suggestion. I may do that on mine. Bill

Again, thanks everyone. I'll shop around for a stocking dealer here in the twin cities and compare the Millet with the Bowen. At the same time I believe I'll take Carl's suggestion and get a new front blade.
I'm not sure but I think some of the trouble I'm having is the frong sight and reflection off it. I've tried flat black paint and it helped some, but still not what I think it can be .
Thanks again,
Vern

Good luck finding the Millett rear sight as they apparently are out of the sight business. Brownells lists all of their sights as having been discontinued, and I haven't been able to find them anywhere else either. Too bad as I do really like their Ruger sights......

That is too bad. I have a few of their sights and one that has been on a S&W M29 for 15 years or so with perfect function. I have Bowen's too but there is absolutely nothing wrong with the Millett's I have.

I was afraid this might happen when Bushnell bought Millett last year.

Vern, As Carl suggested, many of us have replaced Single Six and the screw-on blackhawk ramp front sights with those undercut versions from the Mk. I and II Target model autos for years. They should be available in the used market, but are no longer stocked by Ruger. The barrel contour (and therefore the underside of the front sight) is slightly different than the barrel contour of a Single Six, but not so much that most people would find it objectionable.
Here's another suggestion for you: Ruger now offers a patridge front sight for their Mk. III's that is not undercut as on the earlier versions, but rather, the blade is about 90* perpendicular to the barrel. It's base is narrower, and it fits a Single Six barrel contour perfectly. The height is about .340", the same as a Single Six. The Part Number is AO3612, the price is $9.75, and it can be ordered by calling Ruger in Prescott. In my opinion, it's far superior to the ramp.
I use undercut sights a lot and find them the best for target work, but I must say that this new Ruger version is more holster friendly. On the topic of rear sights, NOTHING compares to the Bowen Target sight. Personally, I'm not a fan of their Rough Country sights.
