Reading callshot's post about the loss (and later recovery) of a handgun left in a car made me think of something I've done for decades w/o really thinking about it. I purchased a pair of handcuffs decades ago,,, real, honest police handcuffs. I leave them in my truck, with one arm lock around the seat frame. When I'm in a place where I may experience a potential loss,, I lock the gun in the other arm cuff,,, I then stick it all as far under my seat as I can, then drop a rag in front of things to camo the area in case a thug is looking & casing the truck. I started doing this in the late 1970's after I had a couple of guns stolen out of my truck. LONG before small safes etc were ever built for such purposes. A pair of handcuffs are cheaper than safes, and safe boxes can be pried open, and even the whole safe box stolen. A set of handcuffs are MUCH tougher to deal with,, and work quite well.
I used to keep them cuffed to my steering wheel arms until needed in my VW,, and it raised a few eyebrows occasionally. I got pulled by a state trooper once, he saw them, asked politely about them, and when I explained what they were for,, (and how a Federal LEO friend had got them for me,) he chuckled,, saying; "Good idea!" He gave me a warning too. Now, they just ride attached to my seat frame.
I keep two keys with me at all times too.
Just an idea to maybe help some folks here.

Great idea.
As a related side note I’ve heard a couple LEOs say that NRA, Ruger, S&W or any bumper sticker or window decal that identifies you as a gun owner also identifies you as a target to a thief.

I agree, no NRA stickers on my vehicles though a member for somewhere around 40 years. I do leave them on towmotors and such at work ! I have thought of placing them on vehicles bearing stickers of our foes..LOL.

Steve... you actually have Towmotors there, or are you giving away your age... I've not actually seen a Towmotor branded piece of equipment for a long time...
I'm not a big fan of having to leave my gun in the truck, & often if I know I'm heading some place that won't allow my carry, I begrudgingly leave it at home...
I've never been a fan of putting stickers on my vehicles... for everything you may be a fan of, there are haters of all those things... don't like to even put a park sticker on my window ( last one I taped on with clear tape so I could pull it & stash in the glove box... put a nascar sticker on your car, & some ass will key your car because they don't like nascar...
the cuffs are a good idea, & my thoughts are, most car break ins are smash & grab crimes of the moment... anything you can do, to make your car look empty ( nothing to steal ) the better, & anything you can do to retain your items ( lock box cabled to the vehicle... or those cuffs ) the better... guessing most smash & grabs aren't carrying a battery powered angle grinder with a cut off wheel, or bolt cutter, or a heavy cable cutter...

LOL, yeah, Towmotor now just a generic term for me. Last new lift truck a Raymond. We have everything from walk behinds to a "Cleco" that runs on a rail like a train. Don't believe we have two of anything, constantly adjusting to different control set-ups. I am liking Contenders idea. Had a little car safe but couldn't find a place to mount that I was happy with. Gave it to a nephew.

I like the handcuff idea and I have a set. When I hunt public land I will leave the gun case (needed for transporting) open showing nothing is inside the case. I have also Made specific ammo that only had a live primer thus if fired it would obstruct the barrel rendering the gun useless. I would chamber that round if I had to leave the pistol in the vehicle. When my car was broke into in my driveway the reporting officer saw the specific ammo in the floor board and asked if a gun was stolen. I said no but he asked about the ammo in the floor. I explained to him what it was and he laughed and said good idea.

Back when I was a kid and had my chopped Harley (55 panhead) I used a pair of handcuffs to lock to the springer frame and as many of the spokes as they would fit around.

Callshot confided in me that he had tried the handcuff trick a couple of years back but got in a hurry one day in Salt Lake when they were shopping & ended up handcuffing himself to the truck & leaving his gun on the seat. His wife had already taken off & a homeless guy came by, seen him cuffed up, stole the gun & his wallet plus he got a citation for urinating in public before his wife got back & got the cuffs off.............

When at work (a secure installation wherein carrying a sidearm is prohibited) my weapon remains locked in a case under the seat, cable-locked to the seat frame. Otherwise, I NEVER leave a weapon in my vehicle. Ever.

I like the handcuffs idea, but how do you lock up a semi auto that way?

Trigger guard mcGraw? Had a 66 no dash stolen from wife's car many many years ago, arrogance was at fault. A "friend" of mine has a new Dodge, new Sig, so new sticker in back window. Went to Bass Pro, now no new Sig.

I say risk it. Let them possibly destroy it. Maybe then they can’t use it to possibly hurt someone with your gun.
