I sorta did a little reloading today.
See,,, I helped a friend get started in reloading handgun ammo. I was able to get a Hornady LNL press from a member here,, ordered a few small parts that were missing,, and today,, we set up the press & I taught him about loading .357 SIG. We experimented with a few loads,, at 10 rounds at a time. It's all adjusted & ready to get serious about loading now. We are going to get together again later this week & work on a few more things. Minor issues,, and swapping it over to 9mm.
So,, we did some loading,, but I was mostly the coach!

ddixie884. It is easy to me. I always do as much as I can to encourage folks in the shooting sports. This guy is a longtime shotgunner,, and wasn't a total newbie. He'd reloaded shotgun ammo a lot several years ago,, and kinda knew his way around what needed to be done. But he wanted to get a progressive set-up, and as we'd been discussing things,, a member here offered some reloading presses & stuff. I was able to meet the member,, and buy the stuff, and then my local friend got the Hornady. I had to chuckle at him a bit,, as he'd been "trying" to learn a bit on his own. He'd gotten a Lee single stage press & a Lee die set. He'd managed to deprime, clean & re-prime a bunch of .357 Sig cases. BUT,, he didn't get them properly re-sized. Bullets fell into the cases when we tried a few of those cases. So, we backed up, started with once fired brass, and things went better. Later on, we took the decapping pin out of his die, and ran the primed brass through proper sizing, and it cured the seating ills.
He also got to chuckle at me a bit. I'm used to the Dillon progressives. I'm also used to a case feed. Well, the Hornady does a 1/2 turn of the ram turret, when you operate the handle, whereas the Dillon does a full turn of one station. I managed to miss putting bullets on a few cases due to this slight difference. BUT,, he picked up on my mistake quickly & got into the correct sequence w/o any issues.
He got a good smile on his face when he fired his first self loaded ammo.
He still needs to buy a few small items,, and as such, it's a learning curve too. He was relying upon internet manual data,, and I STRONGLY (almost demanded) he buy a few good actual manuals. By using the 4 different ones I had taken with me,, and showing him how you can get differences in load data,, I hope it made my point. We worked up a load that was low to mid range to start with. Once he gets a few different loads built, we'll set up my Chrono & I'll show him exactly his velocities & such. And,, we'll work on a few other things too.
But he's also seeing the issue with supplies necessary for loading. He managed to find 4 lbs of Unique,, (my suggestion,) as well as 5000 primers, and a few thousand bullets. So, he has a starting point.

Loaded some light 357 Magnum rounds for light ranch work. Lee 158 RF (actual weight 162 grains, powder coated) 6.1 grains Unique CCI 500 SPP Robust crimp New Starline 357 magnum cases
This is a (basically) 38 special +P load in 357 mag brass for my 2 inch barrel Ruger SP101. This handles most anything I will encounter on a daily basis and has proven itself very accurate even out to 75 yards on the odd occasion I run across a fleeing swine while protecting my hearing despite the short barrel.

I loaded Copper the mule up and headed for the hills just before 6 this morning. Then I loaded my gradually disappearing fanny on her back and climbed a mountain.

Loaded some 275gr. XPB’s up for my new to me FA555, data shows I should expect 1700fps, I’ll be happy with 1600fps. I’ve never been able to get published velocities with mono metal bullets. I do think a 275XPB at 1600fps would make a formidable big game load.
