A very old friend of mine wants me to look at some of his revolvers. He just bought a very expensive old winchester lever gun and he wants to move some of his revolvers. He told me he has a .45c S&W dbl. action revolver that he hasn’t shot in 30yrs. When we graduated high school in 79, he bought a new revolver every month for a while. I am thinking this is one of them. He said he hasn’t shot it in 30yrs. He didn’t remember the model #. After looking on gunbroker, I figured that it is probably a model 25. He is a collector and keeps everything really nice. So, I am wondering what I need to know about this gun. A .45c dbl action is on my short list, and I even have a couple redhawks on my gunbroker watchlist. I am going to look at it this week after he digs out his revolvers. Any information one way or the other would be greatly appreciated. I know to check the throats and lockup and endshake. I am more interested about model specific information. There seems to be alot of 25-different models. Which ones are good? Bad? Thanks in advance for any and all info!

There is a sure fire cure for accuracy problems for that condition AND almost washed-out barrel rifling............... and that is hollow based bullets. I have a wonderful Keith copy 454424 design... that is if enough people would want it enough to sign-up for it.

My very early 25-5 (1979-80) was beautifully finished and excellent in every way, except for the oversize cylinder throats. I no longer remember the dimensions.

It is most likely a 25-5. You didn't mention the barrel length but they came in the three standards, 4" 6" and 8 3/8". I have a 4" with correct throats and it is one that will stay with me to the end. My 6" had very large throats (pinned barrel) as well as a pretty tight thread choke. After fire lapping the barrel and using 454 bullets (Lyman 454424) with Unique powder it was shooting very well, better than it should have. I let a friend trade me a Colt SAA for it and he shoots it every week. He is very happy with the gun. If it matters the 4" guns seem to bring the highest prices. You read the John Linebaugh writings on the M25 so you know the capabilities. He pushes his harder than I ever do mine. I figure he might know someone that can tune one up if it gets a little out of whack from heavy loads. If you get a chance, shoot the gun before the purchase. Some of those large throated guns shoot pretty good in spite of all of our measuring. FYI but the 6" gun I had shot fantastic with jacketed bullets before I did anything to it. (Indication of thread choke) Dan p.s. I would be very interested in a hollow base 45 mold.

If I get it, I will only shoot standard pressure loads through it. I have blackhawks and rarely shoot hot loads out of them. I am going to bring my pin gauges with me as well as feeler gauges. I have known this guy since we were kids and he was always more of a collector and an admirer than a shooter. In the eighties he had alot of very nice dbl action S&W’s. That is probably the last time I have seen any of his guns. Since then I think he has concentrared more on lever guns and shotguns. I may come home with half a dozen. I just won’t know till he knocks the dust off and calls me to come over. I will keep y’all posted.
