I'd often thought I'd like to own a 38/44/45 converted gun. Given that Alan and Hamilton stopped doing caliber conversions it seemed like that'd never happen. A couple went high on GB, with one with Persinger ivories I could never afford. One day Dick (rWt) mentioned something about having one he was going to cut loose. I sent a PM and a Barranti clad 5" 38/44 turned 45 came home to me. As a matter of fact one year ago today we shook hands via keyboard on this. I had a gun in line with Mr. Fishpaw but quickly called him and asked if I could shift gears to which he humbly said yes. This is the end result, it's taken a while to get home and a while to post pics.
I sent my gun to Mr. Fishpaw in December of last year I believe, and he told me the grips should be done around March. Around March I hadn't heard anything and I've learned if you're worried about timing then you might not want to be in these games. In May of last year Mr. Rowen was in Mr. Fishpaws' shop and saw my walnut grips which Mr. Rowen kinda figured they were for me as Mr. Fishpaw told him they were for a guy in Florida. Mr. Fishpaw got them to this point, those are Mr. Rowens' hands.
Not long after June Mr. Fishpaw fell ill. He kinda recovered from what is was that hit him (I do not know) but he did not return to the bench. I knew this was going on as Mr. Rowen told me so. I just let it be, it didn't matter as what was going on was bigger than a couple of hunks of wood. Well, Mr. Fishpaw passed on as we all know. Mr. Rowen called me and told me out of honor to Mr. Fishpaw he was going to do the rest of the grips. Here is a picture from along the way.
As you can see from the first few pics, Mr. Rowens' completed work is outstanding to say the least. The reason there's not a pic of the whole gun is because a year ago I took out the cylinder before I sent it to Mr. Fishpaw, he felt that made it legal. People are funny, and he's people. I can't find it and I've been looking on and off for two weeks. I'm sure it's wherever I put it, which is where everything usually is. This is the last picture I have to show of the grips.
I say all of that to say this, these are the last grips fitted to a gun and initialed by Mr. Fishpaw and the only set there will ever be with RCF and RR in them. Wow does not describe the enormity of this, at least to me.
My son broke a toy and I needed a magnifying glass. Opened up a drawer I've looked in ten times and found the cylinder for this. Merry Christmas to all including me!
