I think this kind of points back to my thread about what people meant by "breaking down" deer with hard cast vs lung shot with JHP.
It isn't so much that they were aiming for shoulders with cast as it was they were avoiding shoulder bones with JHP's.

Black Bears are tough critters, I've never shot one but I ran over this one about 20 years ago. I don't mean we hit it, I ran it over with an F-150 pilling a trailer. It caved in the front bumper, hit the rear axle, then hit the trailer axle. All this happened on a 4 lane highway just east of Canon City Colorado. I was doing 65-70 mph after dark, never saw it and wasn't sure what I'd hit. It was DARK Small Bear It got up and WALKED OFF into the brush.

In reality, How bad would a cast bullet would have had to shoot to be to the point that you couldnt have made a killing shot on a 300 pound bear at 20 to 25 yards? Now in reality okay. I have taken 24 whitetails and a cougar, all one shot kills BUT it took three shots on an elk. I would want something tougher for bears.

Sorry I misspoke. I am wrong as usual . Dont know when to keep my mouth shut at times. I was thinking, shooting from a tree stand, at more than likely an unexcited bear of 300 pounds, where one could place ones shot I was thinking while not the best for a bear a 240 X T P should work. Again I am sorry. In reality, How bad would a cast bullet would have had to shoot to be to the point that you couldnt have made a killing shot on a 300 pound bear at 20 to 25 yards? I used to live in Azle. I remember when a semi hit a hog on I-20 just outside Weatherford. The truck turned over!

That's quite a story, you don't hear of many bears getting hit by cars or trucks, hogs yes but not bears! Both hogs & bears have short legs & they are compact & if you are willing to wait for the right shot from your stand that 240 gr XTP will get the job done but if you want to break shoulders or take what Elmer referred to as a "raking" shot then you need more bullet. Another thing to consider is velocity, there's no need to run that XTP at top speed because it can fail at close range, better off to back it down a bit & give it a chance to penetrate. I would use more bullet to begin with if it were me, a heavier jacketed bullet or a good cast bullet wide a wide meplat that will take out the shoulders if that's your shot (good one) The premium bullets mentioned are such a small price to pay to avoid losing a bear or having to track one in heavy cover, why risk it? Bears don't bleed very good because of the long hair so even with an exit there are times you don't find much to work with if they get out of sight. Best to anchor them as fast as you can & you'll hear that death moan pretty fast.... If anything is still wiggling, shoot it!!!!

K.E. ? Am thinking Taylor K.O.Factor here ! But bears and hogs of similar size are dense. Niece totaled a car on a hog in the Tampa area some years ago. She said it was like hitting a big rock. Think the 240 gr XTP would be ok for shooting treed bears too.
