in reality... spalted maple is starting to rot, so it needs to be stabilized... once stabilized they are very durable

I think the spalted maple grips are my favorite wood grips. With a nice walnut a close second. Are they durable? Anything beyond reasonable care needed to keep them looking their best?
well usually spalted wood needs to be stabilized to be strong enough for grips. once it's stabilized it's hard to hurt them with normal use. of course nothings set in stone. i'm working on several spalted maple burl sets for an N frame smith and even though they have some nice black spalt lines in them they're still as hard as normal maple burl.

ZANE: I KNOW WHAT STABILIZATION IS BUT I DO NOT KNOW HOW IT IS DONE, NOR IF DIFFERENT PORCESSES ARE USED FOR WOOD, BONE, ANTLER, HORN, etc. COULD YOU PROVIDE A SHORT TUTORIAL ON STABILIZATION FOR THE DIFFERENT NATURAL GRIP MATERIALS.

I guess it's like carving an elephant out of a block of marble

well Sir, I believe the same basic process works for all the materials you mentioned.
what they do is they take a set of blanks and put them into a vacuum chamber, they then add a clear resin to the chamber and completely cover the blanks. the lid is put on the chamber and the vacuum turned on which draws out all the air and draws the resin into every pore of the blanks. once the blanks are completely filled they are then wrapped up in foil and baked in an oven to cure the resin.
they sell setups on ebay so you can do all this from home but I haven't been completely happy with some of the blanks I've bought that were stabilized this way so now I send my blanks off to be professionally stabilized by K&G.
