I voted for the 7.5" PC... I have a 4" now and when I find a used 7.5" would like to buy it... I had a 6" with the three small ports in the barrel and it just didn't cut it for recoil reduction...

I’ve had several 500s. I absolutely hate ported guns, so my vote is for the only 500 I currently own, the JR500.

For me the unported guns were just not pleasant at all to shoot. I have also shot one of the original 8 3/8" guns that have the same brake as the 4" and it was MUCH more pleasant to shoot with full bore 440 grain loads than my FA .454 with warm but not full loads... www.gunblast.com/LT_SW-JohnRoss500.htmMy only wish is that Smith had brought the 4" 500 out as a 5" like the .460....

...an "understatement"....
"This muzzle nut replaces the compensator, which John feels actually makes the .500 more unpleasant to shoot due to blast, though recoil/muzzle flip does go up somewhat."
...as proven by...
"A friend of mine whose John Ross PC .500 revolver has not come in yet asked me if he could take mine to the indoor range to whet his appetite for his revolver. Since he normally shoots tighter 25 yard groups than I do I agreed as I felt that would let me see how well the guns shot. Using the 275 grain DPX .500 Magnum load, he put three shots into about 3 inches. With the 350 grain Cor-Bon .500 Special load, his best 25 yard group was more like 3.5 inches. I felt both groups were good for a first firing session with a new and rather daunting gun. I should note, too, that muzzle flip was substantial enough when my friend fired .500 Magnum loads from a hand held rest, he cut a notch in his head with the rear sight!"
...no thanks...

FYI... group sizes don't really matter with a 500 magnum... At a local Shooters Round up, I was able to shoot an 8" barrel 500 magnum from the factory representive at the local shop's range... this range is outdoors, but has carpeted walls between the lanes... this day they set up 6 - 6" steel disks about 25 ft down my lane... on the 1st shot, the concussion knocked all 6 disks over... I think I heard a ring of the bullet striking the 1st plate, over the thunderous roar... after the 1st, it was just blast, blast, blast, for the fun of it... ( I bought 6 cartridges to shoot through the gun... only needed one to clear the plates ) I have a custom 50 A.E. Super Blackhawk, & wanted a 50 S&W in the worst way... but if I were to buy today I think I'd like another 50 magnum... one that doesn't require a 3" cylinder & the "funny" balance that goes with it... I was actually going to buy the bear package 500 snubbie

In my case, I wanted a 50 caliber Revolver, not necessarily a 500 Magnum. I would have been happy with a 500 Special, if there was such a thing.
I have only shot a few full power 500 Magnum loads, I much prefer loads around 1000 FPS.

I own a 7.5” pc version after having shot the 4” and 8 3/8”” version.
The short barrel just took away too much heft with full power loads. The 8 inch was just a brick. It felt like the 7.5 was a nice compromise between weight and bbl length

I thought about the john ross version and almost pulled the trigger on one recently. To me a 500 is a weapon for the dangerous and/or very large game and for that i use 400hr or so punch or solid copper bullets so no need for what the ross version brings to the table.

When I started looking and found Mr. Ross’ research and reasoning, there was no turning back for me. His gun is a reloaders dream come true. It is indeed pretty nasty with full power loads but is more flexible and a great platform for those who wish to persue the flexability of the 500.

My experiance with the Smith 500 lasted 2 shots...I will stick with my 500 L. in loads from mild to wild...my 2 cents

There is an article in the current Blue Press about downloading the 500 for the Bighorn Arms levergun.
