the discussion that is taking place on the "what model Colt is this" thread made me wonder, & I didn't want to side track too far...
I'm not really a colt revolver guy, & my good buddy ( the retired tool & die guy ) has a very sour attitude towards Colt double actions... since my collecting is pretty diverse, I'd like a good example or two...
with the prices the snake guns are bringing, I'm probably not looking at something like that ( but if they were the most durable... maybe I need to??? ) ( how bad could a Detective Special really be??? )
Bradshaw seem to have a good post about Colt trying to catch up with S&W... if I listen to my retired buddy, the only one I need is the 1917 I currently have... just some thoughts, on durability, & servicability

In for information!
By Providence, luck, the fickle finger of fate or what have you, I started out with S&W because Colts were always out of my budget. As a result a Colt spins backwards to me and the cylinder release isn't near as comfortable or intuitive for me. But I still think it wouldn't hurt to have an affordable Colt .357 in the accumulation...

The Trooper MKIII is a great Colt with an great trigger and very durable. They have a beautiful blued finish (nickel as well), and don’t bring the stupid money the Python brings.

Can’t go wrong with a used Detective Special either.

Although I've owned a few Pythons and Diamonbacks my favorite Colt DAs are the Troopers. I have one 1968 vintage .357 Magnum and a 1954 .22...both are 4" guns. The .357 has target stocks and hammer but the .22 is just standard.
A nice .357 Trooper made between 1960 and 1969 will run $750-950...a .22 a little more...

Owned a few MkIII Troopers, one Mk V, two King Cobra's. Been looking for another MkV but they are getting stupid expensive along with all DA Colts. My brother still has a Python I think bought many years ago when they could be had for under a K, unlike now.

I know is sounds strange... but the Colt bluing was the most attractive feature that always drew me to them...

I have an Agent and an Official Police. The Agent spends a lot of time in my pocket while my wife and I shoot the Official Police out back quite a bit. The Offical Police/Army Special and the various Police Positive iterations are still reasonably priced while being a whole lot nicer than anything made today. I'd like a 32 Long/New Police Police Positive with a 4" barrel just because I think it would fit in a hip pocket nicely (or a really trim belt holster) and be perfect for whacking grouse and bunnies around the farm.

Eric Saw a few .32 police positives like that doing a search for pre-war revolvers on Guns International a week or two back. Mostly in the $400 to $600 range. I'd throw up a link but the link for an advanced search doesn't include the parameters. Try advanced search using category Colt Revolver - Police Positive and Caliber 32.

Being kind of a history buff, I like the Colts.
The Trooper and the 3 5 7 are two that are still obtainable for reasonable money. All 3 Trooper models are nice.
I'm probably a 357 fan. and Maximums really float my boat. However, if it wasn't for the Diamondbacks I wouldn't be a 38 special nerd as well. Those are in my top 5 list of all around favorites. More money, but you get what you pay for. If you can get anything nice in the $1500 range, I would see that as a best buy. They are still somewhat sleepers and haven't hit the Python numbers.
Durability (timing) is often discussed as being questionable with massive number of rounds. Serviceability is problematic for all guns out of production. Neither of those concerns stop me when I see a nice Colt for reasonable money.
